WHAT DOES THE FUTURE REALLY HOLD? - ALPHA OMEGA - 16th December 2003

hehehe you caught the tunes on http://www.dnbhq.com

:mutley:

Those tunes don't pay the bills anymore than my more leftfield stuff to be honest they sell equally well.

If anything I see my left of centre eventually taking over sales of the more dancefloor material since there seems to be such a global demand for it & a lot of folks from outside the scene who would not appreciate the club bangers will appreciate the 'weird' stuff.

I just gotta try getting them to hear it & know it's out there for them to pick up.

Baffled

As for the future of d&b?

With the dum monkeys running it at the mo I have no hope for the more mainstream aspects of the music.

When those lp's from the 90's went huge certain talent should've capitalized & really took this thing global & use them as a platform.

The only cat who did that was Mr.Roni Size & his Bristonian comrades, them boys sell records for fun & have a huge global market to always tap into & have the dollars to show for their hard work.

Shy Fx did it recently aswell & did great on the singles front, but I'm not too sure how the lp sold.

But everybody sees all this big successs & either does poor imitations(really poor) or slags em off & makes the most noisiest horrid piece of noise your ever gonna hear.

No-one actually embraced the bigger platform this warranted us & said 'Now let's show the world what we can do'

Except for Kosheen.....yeah slag em all you want but they showed them all & are pushing good units & now have a tasty pension & to be honest their music's not half bad!

But one group doesn't make up for the rest of dum monkeys.

I've always harped on about selling the music short,if you think this thing is about knocking out your little rollas for a saturday night & that's it then your doing more harm than those dj's who only play Anthems for 2hours week in week out.

Everyone has a responsibility to themselves to put in 100%,if your just in this for the dough then put in 100% into doing that.If it's about edits, put 100% in,vocals & live instrumentation? put 100% in.

Too much half-stepping & pussy footing has gone on with us producers & the labels ,at the end of the day,can only put out what the artists give them right???

Ppl need to fix up & represent & try to make every tune/release something special.

Check Forestry Service next year to know what I'm talking about Wink

But all that's just my personal gripe with some aspects of d&b.

As for the future

I think we as an industry will have to find a way of selling & marketing the sale of mp3's with regards to electronic dance music.

I'm hoping a live circuit opens up more for d&b acts & they have the guts to embrace it.The only live act in d&b who are/were any good were 4Hero,if you caught their show you'll know what I'm saying.

Dev described them in an interview as 'The Dream Team'

Most other live d&b acts have failed miserably.

That shit's tough to do right but when you got it sussed it's a beautiful thing.

-Videos & visuals-

If we want our music to be sold globally the visual medium will have to come into play & be embraced just as much as anything else in the music.

Have u seen the d&b show on MTV base? The same old 10yr old videos week in week out :yawn

Y r we not making videos for tunes? I know there's some brilliant graphic ppl involved in the scene so y not incorporate their talents?

I would luv 2 go out with a laptop,a couple fx units a drum machine, sampler & a whole visual show running alongside & in time with the music, taking the whole experience that bit further.
I know it's old news in other circles of music but I would luv 2 c it in d&b since this is still the most powerful form of electronic music I've heard.

Stop selling the music short

As for Code.

Why is asking questions & stimulating debate something you dismissed as activities for 4yr olds?

right on AO!
for the last years drum and bass is lacking ideas/concepts/projects!!!
i hope some big boys are gonna make decent coherent albums again instead of a collection of dj-friendly 12s pretending to be an album...

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE REALLY HOLD? - ALPHA OMEGA - 16th December 2003

Nothing more than compilation albums.

Doesn't make the music bad,but there could be more done than just gathering some nice tunes from your pals & throwing them out there.

If Dylan & Tech Itch did vids & cisuals for this it would be wicked.

& I would luv to see that,it helps me digest the product better

[no jokes please Smile]

& all this visual stuff doesn't need to cost loads does it?

A good idea is a good idea

Not really a compilation is tunes that usually have already been released, these tunes are part of a project specifically for the album.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE REALLY HOLD? - ALPHA OMEGA - 16th December 2003

& yeah Code there's loads of questions because there's loads of topics to be covered.

what about Pieter K's album

i don't think the technical freaks album will be anything more then some (good) tunes thrown together...not a REAL album imo...maybe i'm wrong!

i have my hopes up for goldie's album yes...

pieter k album: well i just got it, it's amazing and coherent indeed! fucking great shit i love it! maybe not accessible enough though for a broad public? (uh-oh, dangerous ground i'm entering now :P i'm not saying it should be watered down or anything mind you)

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE REALLY HOLD? - john doe - 16th December 2003

i think its right spot on accessible for a big audience
cos of the influences.

heck even my dad liked it

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE REALLY HOLD? - karbonkid - 16th December 2003

yeah, maybe, i'm not too sure cos i've only heard it a couple of times now...i have the feeling he could go even more diverse though cos he has the talent to do so (and he's one of the few) and really break some ground with the public (include some deep jazz, some house, some lighter peaces, etc.) dunno?! Baffled

not a critique on the album, definately not...

what i wanted to say is that i wish somebody in drum'n'bass should make an album again that includes dnb but breaks through to a big audience, like timeless and in the mode...easier said then don tho and that's HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE understatement...

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE REALLY HOLD? - ALPHA OMEGA - 16th December 2003

that Pieter K lp is more accessible than you realise.

The melodies on there are quite infectious & not hard 2 grasp.Simple & subtle & not too overstated.

How can his 2nd lp hold up to the 1st????
