buying one record reviewed in The Wire each month

Bought 5 tracks from this - I don't want a 25 minute dissonant violin track - and decidedly cheaper as a result:

Fiorini - Violin Concertos

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00IJ...s_sp_ps_dp
okay then... #363

Thomas Ankersmit - Figueroa Terrace (Touch)

Dub Spencer & Trance Hill - William S Burroughs in Dub (Echo Beach)

Meredith Monk - Piano Songs (ECM)

Akio Suzuki & Aki Onda - ma ta ta bi (Oral)

So I've nearly caught up now. #364 will have to wait while I have a rest. Hopefully #365 won't arrive in the meantime Grumble

"Brainforest":

Pretty good Xyxthumbs

Muttley Wrote:Here's the original Amazon LP which is somewhat busier overall - eMusic has a wonderful bug of putting in free trial notes upon pressing the download button. So I'm going to buy this instead.

"Breaking Stone":

Muttley Wrote:"Breaking Stone" is fantastic. The last track is really difficult (40 minutes long) but decidedly worth it. "It falls somewhere between sound poetry and song". I won't be hearing it many times - only in times of difficulty, as it has lots of harsh vocalisations over piano - but damn, what a purchase.
I like the player piano pieces. Not so bothered about the long one with voice. Wink

Muttley Wrote:Listen to this sample Statto, from another purchase in Brian Morton's column:

The last one in stock at Amazon! Wonderful classical music in the vein of Gorecki - page 64 in The Wire #364. On the strength of this audio excerpt:

http://www.universaledition.com/Fete-gal.../work/2460

I just bought: KRAUZE ZYGMUNT-Fete Galante Et Pastorale - Instrumental

http://www.amazon.co.uk
Doesn't do much for me that. But then I don't much like Gorecki either. Fauxpas

Ah, yes, I like these. And I'd definitely have bought the 25 minute dissonant violin as well. Grin
I'm having trouble with #364 because some of things I want to listen to aren't out yet and I can't find any audio for them Grumble

These are pretty good though:

Tom Chang - Tongue & Groove (Raw Toast)

I've been reading the articles around Soundcheck in #364. Cross Platform was very enlightening, looking forward to checking the cosmic disco tracks from Golden Teacher. Can't really remember the rest. What do you recommend I check most from your 5 selected Jon?

check them all Icon_razz

but if you've not heard Helmut Lachenmann before, try that Xyxthumbs
Helmut Lachenmann just sounds like violin tuning up. What do you like about it?

Hahaha

That he uses real instruments (and extended techniques) to make unlikely noises Smile
these are jolly as well:

various - Calypso: Musical Poetry in the Caribbean 1955-1969 (Soul Jazz)

various - Island Records Presents Dub: 38 Hard and Heavy Dub Cuts (Spectrum)

Bluesmiley Smiley Bluesmiley Smiley Bluesmiley
Thanks, will check 'em out. Currently listening to Pinch - Cold mix from +Torment+'s excellent "Dimension Intrusion" thread.

Statto Wrote:That he uses real instruments (and extended techniques) to make unlikely noises Smile

If I wanted unlikely noises I'd listen to some Bussotti. Much more composed and thorough, as well as being unpredictable and containing some odd operatic vocals occasionally.
I recommend this album for Wire readers; I've had it for over 10 years and it still sounds excellent.

The Alpha Rhythm - Proof Of Concept

http://www.amazon.com/Proof-Concept-The-...ng_title_0

One of my top 15 albums, actually.
damn, #365 has given me 17 records to choose between

must whittle this list down

Baffled
I'm not looking for new music as I'm not consuming anything new that I haven't already subscribed for (i.e eMusic, Ghostly International on Drip.FM, Tailored Communications and Organic promos) - I have what I need already and am savouring every last drop. But before I stopped collecting mentally, I got from eMusic Pharoahe Monch - PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) which pisses over any other hip hop I've heard except BusDriver. It's an album on the theme of mental health which makes a change from the usual 'n', auto-tune and cringe-worthy 'motherfucker' vocals of hip hop.

I'm particularly enjoying the Alan Courtis interview for observational policy and harvesting review themes out of the writing.

Another Wire find... that name is Xyxthumbs
Statto Wrote:must whittle this list down

now down to six...

Robin Hayward - Nouveau Saxhorn Nouveau Basse (Pogus)

Jacaszek & Kwartludium - Catalogue des Arbres (Touch)

Jake Meginsky - L'Appel du Vide (Open Mouth)

Toshiji Mikawa / Hideaki Shimada / Nobuo Yamada / Katsuyoshi Kou - Quasispecies Four (Art Into Life)

David Ross & Clive Bell - Recovery Suite (Ini.itu)

various - African Gems (SWP)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/African-Gems-Var...B00K6O2U3K

I've actually bought the David Ross & Clive Bell LP already, but whether that'll be the "one record", I'm not sure

Chin
lol at Stattzi and is noo moosik crusade
Once I got over how pretentiously theatrical the choreography for related videos to this were, I started to enjoy the 1 minute soundtrack.

That's from the February issue btw. I'm tired of the 'keeping up with trends' tedium that onsets my mindstate when I have an endless stream of stuff to choose from, and feeling like I can't listen to that - and enjoy it - without searching out the next thing asap. I've missed 2 whole issues in the last year. The Compiler one looks good but I never had chance to read it. Now I'm making time after scratching on the excellent Jandek pt. 1 issue. So with my cutting out of CD buying and sticking to my subs, things look rosy. Grin
This is quite nice - apparently the most beautiful track on Marissa Nadler's "July" according to Joseph Stannard

No worries; The Wire isn't the magazine for trends anyway, just a load of random stuff that you've mostly never heard of. Wink And I understand about the "endless stream". There's just so much music out there and not enough time.

Off my own bat – that is, other than things I discover accidentally or are recommended to me – I hardly ever look anywhere but The Wire nowadays.

btw 365 is this one: Jacaszek & Kwartludium - Catalogue des Arbres (Touch)

Have another chaps

Statto Wrote:No worries; The Wire isn't the magazine for trends anyway, just a load of random stuff that you've mostly never heard of. Wink

Well, it has its own trends for what it reports on, biases etc like any other magazine. But in general there's enough balanced content to make it a worthy read each time.

Quote:And I understand about the "endless stream". There's just so much music out there and not enough time.

And I like to feel that I don't "need" time, because that takes the enjoyment out of me just finding pleasure in the moment. Transcendental behaviour really.

Smileys!

I look on Juno's newsletters for machine-like reviews of music, but I don't read the reviews, as they're mostly devoid of interest for me. Boomkat is the same, although it used to be much better, and if I didn't read the Ateleia - Formal Sleep CD review when it was still in stock, I wouldn't have acquired my fave LP ever.

Thanks for that, the clips sounded good, so I found it on eMusic and that way I can buy it. Smile

Marissa Nadler's LP is on there too, amongst other stuff, and I nabbed it so you can check it out.
Whatcha think of the St Vincent feature Stattzi? Stannard notes she plays Conlon Nancarrow pieces for player piano. Xyxthumbs

It seems like they're going more mainstream as Bjork is mentioned for stylism.
Muttley Wrote:Whatcha think of the St Vincent feature Stattzi?

it was okay – her music doesn't do a lot for me though.

Muttley Wrote:It seems like they're going more mainstream as Bjork is mentioned for stylism.

they've been fans of bjork forever Xyxthumbs
I liked the St Vincent track I heard on Mary Anne Hobbs' 6Music Recommends show a month ago. Her music is said to deal or spring from themes of anxiety and depression so I might be able to connect with it more so.
