I'm more enthusiastic about reading every review in #366 as Derek Walmsley told me as a hint that a review of my LP "Derelict Career" is hidden in the pages, like a meta narrative (comparable subjects, comparable descriptors).
buying one record reviewed in The Wire each month

Meta language isn't consistent in prose, you should know that.

The point is, I can find several interlocking descriptions in the narrative of Soundcheck that apply to me. In my most psychotic, delusions of grandeur moments, I think the editors have specifically asked reviewers to include cross-subjective opinion about my album into the group narrative of reviews. This way I would find a more globalised (and important) connection within junctures.
Hmm. So I quite like the St Vincent and Rand Steiger in the issue, I'm playing a couple of tunes from "A Menacing Plume" in the Plug DJ SC room right now. But I don't think the Rand Steiger is "maybe too beautiful" - it sounds a bit much of a muchness for me. In the sense that I like it, but I wouldn't buy it, I need to feel more of a spark.
Re: hidden review Jon - hits the nail on the head pretty much in the third paragraph of the Alien Brains anthology review in The Boomerang
I'm up to the Collateral Damage feature in #366 by Emily Bick which sounds great, and I've read the entire Soundcheck up to The Inner Sleeve. So for once I'm actually on timeline with The Wire's world.

At the moment I have a long list of 11; I'll post a short list when I've whittled it down a bit.
okay, here's my short list for #366...
Flava D - Flava D Vol.5 (Bandcamp) http://flavadubs.bandcamp.com/album/flavad-com-vol-5 Mortals - Cursed to See the Future (Relapse) http://mortals.bandcamp.com/releases Pascal - Nihilist Chakai House (Discombobulate) http://www.discombobulaterecords.com/ Dave Phillips - Homo Animalis (Schimpfluch Associates) http://schimpflu.ch/associates/sha-01 various - Traces Three (Recollection GRM) http://www.juno.co.uk/products/traces-th...537549-01/ and then there's this: Electric Funeral - Total Funeral (Southern Lord) http://www.juno.co.uk/products/electric-...542815-01/ which is absolutely relentless. I might pick it just for that reason Muttley Wrote:So for once I'm actually on timeline with The Wire's world. That didn't last long. New issue arrived last Monday and reads great so far (#367) - especially the Rory Gibb and Dan Barrow columns, where I found Blevin Blectum and discovered this as a result on another link... https://soundcloud.com/brainfeeder/mono-poly-ra-rise Something to brighten up your day Stattzi it's like Boards Of Canada on Valium. I should spend less idle time flicking between sites and more on studying writing styles and records like I used to.
This is quite nice; from #366 by Lee Gamble - "Untitled Reversion"

I quite like this from Dan Barrow's column in #367...
Ital - Endgame http://www.amazon.co.uk/Endgame-Ital/dp/B00LVZK21K (only 30 second clips) Muttley Wrote:Listening now. Don't you hate the vocals Stattzi? No. I don't hate vocals altogether. Just a lot of vocals. In particular feeble indie rocker vocals.
I really like this tip-off from #367 - associated with The Child Readers who I downloaded because of The Wire in 2007 - this project called The Shitty Listener:

Would watching an Aphex Twin thing on youtube count as buying an album?
Reading Dean Blunt feature right now
Oops, I haven't finished it. Should correct that.
Might listen to Signor Benedick The Moor on page 61 - as long as the "El Negro" album hasn't got the word "n***er" in it, anyway.
It has got that egregious word in it - quite a lot - but I'll tolerate that as the productions are worthwhile listening. I might even buy it.

I'm going to listen to the Tricky LP on page 59 next.
New issue come through already. Robert Fripp of King Crimson / "Heroes" guitar for Bowie on the cover. It's also got two acts I really like on the cover too - Pharmakon and Grumbling Fur.
Stattzi, you're falling behind with your #367 pick :P Muttley Wrote:Stattzi, you're falling behind with your #367 pick :P I know; I'm still reading and haven't really started on the reviews yet interesting ones from a quick scan: Robert Curgenven - Sirène (Recorded Fields) Dopplereffekt / Objekt - Hypnagogia (Leisure System) â actually I have this already Ikonika - Position (Hyperdub) Sarah Peebles - Delicate Paths: Music for Shô (Unsounds) |
