My brain hurts from reading around the subject!
Reading back through the thread I realise I'm looking at around £100 more on the HD-650s compared to a few years back
£275 is the cheapest I can find in the UK (Digital Village) and shipped over at £243 from Thomann.
The cheapest HD-600s I can find in the UK are £225 from Play. If anyone knows differently please let me in on it
In terms of which pair I lump for I'm just not sure as to what to do.. the purpose is really critical listening so I realise it should most likely be the 600s..
but a voice in my head wants the 650s. Have you all left the foam in your 650s? Some audiophile boffins seem to think it acts as an undesirable 'veil' - but then audiophiles are a unique breed..
Regarding amps... I use both Emu 1820m (desktop) and Emu 1616m (laptop) card + dock combos; this thread at SOS leads me to believe they will provide enough juice for the HD-650s, although I'll mainly be using them through my cheap and cheerful SM Pro M-Patch 2 monitor controller with headphone amp (short balanced connection from either Emu dock..)
[edit - added some quotes for my own piece of mind]:
I realise none of the above is really going to cut it but funds won't stretch to a decent amp at this stage;
those I can afford right now seem a pointless stop-gap from what I currently have at my disposal.
Any thoughts from anybody are welcomed! This includes 'just order some now' type advices.
Thanks

Emu 1616m Manual Wrote:The headphone amplifier can drive headphones with
impedance as low as 24 ohms. The headphone output uses a high-current version of
the high-quality output amplifiers used on the other channels. For this reason it has a
very clean signal that can be used as another stereo output if you need it.
SM Pro M-Patch 2 Manual Wrote:HEADPHONE OUTPUT
Output Connectors - 1 x 14” TRS stereo output
Frequency response - 20Hz—20Hz +/- 0.5dB
Maximum output level - 320mW into 32Ω
