Saying that, I am tempted by the modular route - a digital modular sounds pretty sweet to me. I like the look of a couple of digital oscillators like Mutable Instruments Braids, or the Morphing Terrarium by Synthesis Technology. To be honest I like the look and sound of most of the Mutable Instruments modules, but there are so many makes and modules I wouldn't know where to begin. The G2 Engine is kind of my cop-out, at least I wont go mental for modules with that...yet.
From my recent experience, the makenoise systems are a great place to start. I have no regrets dropping the money I did on a shared system - plenty of possibilities and a solid starting point. I started out getting a few modules, though it's overwhelming to start one from scratch. Though I still daydream about different setups...
