Phase Vocoder Appreciation Thread
Ok... So I've been messing around with digitally assissted music for quite a while (5 years or so), and, tho I don't make the best tunes around (yet), I have learned, and perhaps pioneered some pretty amazing techniques.
I'm gonna share a little bit of that knowledge here.

What the phase vocoder (as I learned it) does is it splits a given sample of sound into it's seperate component frequencies. (Kinda like a prism) This is accomplished through a lengthy multiplication of sines and cosines.

Phase
from a thread on DOA:

A delicate sonic matter...

... PHASE.

Now, up until very recently I've never even given the subject of phase and phasing a moment's though- in fact, I wanna strangle the fuckwit who highlighted it to me, 'cos now it's giving me no end of headache.

I was of the thinking that if I doubled up samples or if differing samples had common frequencies I'd run into difficulty, and audible difficulty at that. However, using the Waves' PAZ Analyzer has

Silent Phase and Kosmic Messenger
I'm looking for the collections of stuff by Stacey Pullen under these two aliases.

- Electronic Poetry: The Collected Works of Kosmic Messenger

- Silent Phase - The Theory of Silent Phase

They're quite hard to find and out of print now - I want to buy them, so if anyone spots them about great, but equally if anyone fancies doing swops for something of mine (I have loads of good techno albums, some jazz and plenty of C20th minimalist music) then that would be good.

Just wanted to share that the latest version of my site is up. I'd say at least half of it is d&b or music related. Thought some might be interested.

Stereo Phase Problems
Ok, i've got a pad in a track that has a really wide stereo image, but flicking it into mono kills the sound totally, and almost removes it from my mix.

I don't really want to compensate by reducing the stereo width.....is there anything else i can do just so i can have a mono compatible mix that behaves.....

Thx

XAF.

Help dealing with Phase issues
Hey fellas,

Could do with a little help here, I'm using omnisphere for the pads on a track I'm making and I'm running into phase cancellation problems. When running the tune in stereo it sounds great with a nice full stereo image, but when I hit the mono switch the pads pretty much disappear. Perhaps part of the problem is the Chorus Delay module on Omnisphere, as turning the depth down on it seems to make the problem much less apparent, but then it loses a lot of the richness and width of

Pretty damn cool! The bits where it sounds reversed! Insane. Bit of a headache after a while but you have to admire the sheer skill.
