The Human Abstract
while the tunes are great for the most part - i hate to be the one to say that i have never been a fan of esb and unions mixing and structure of sets...so boring! I know they are trying to let the tunes roll out and all, but try to build a little energy or something! I feel like they just put the names of the tunes in a hat and picked them at random....why do i feel this way about most newer mixes, especially esb/union ones? i know im new and dont mean to be slagging especially for such a great cause, but i kind of felt it needed to be said... just my .02 Oops

What would you have done?
UFO_over_easy Wrote:What would you have done?

I would have put the tunes in an order that built energy and tension. Using the order of the tunes, the way in which they were mixed, how fast and at what parts etc. to create a flow and excitement that highlighted the great sounds of the label, took the listener on a journey AND showed off my DJ skills - which is what a mix should be no?
I dont feel that this mix does that, and really should have - especially for a label like SC that needs the exposure and has an extremely colorful and diverse group of sounds that make up the label - the mix should have reflected that - not just good tunes thrown together haphazardly. Did you want me to come up with a tracklist? that would take some thinking.

i realise that i am new to this board and i am saying some pretty strong words and thoughts about the folks who make this all happen - and i really dont mean to come on here and slag ppl because im not about that. I just feel like i should speak my mind and i feel strongly about this one. Flame/Ban away....

mate, no one is flaming or banning you. you made an assertion so it's only right that you should expect to have to defend that. i just asked a simple question challenging you Xyxthumbs

i do feel that your comment about showing off your dj skills misses the point somewhat. the point is this mix isn't really about esb and unions dj-ing, it's the fantastic tunes which have been chosen to represent subvert central. in this case, a good dj is one that you don't have to think about or examine, not a dj that steals the show and draws attention away from the tunes.

All I can say without completely losing my cool here is ......... WOW. Hey if this is how anyone else feels about our mix please let me know. That mix is all timed down to the beat and took hours and hours to put together. Ummmm sorry we didn't mix every track longer but my understanding was that this was a mix used for promotion of the label. I thought that maybe the songs should breathe a little so that people could hear the full tracks. And dood if you are such a smashing DJ ......... Who are you..... and please tell me how we should have mixed it. Icon_question
p.s. If you do not like our mixing, do not listen to us anymore. Seems pretty simple doesn't it!

i thought it worked really well Twothumbs

but respect to shooter for having his say Xyxthumbs
there will always be haters.

i have had an extremely bad week and it gets worse with
time. for this reason i am just shutting my computer down
for the night and dealing with the real world around me.

like union said....if you don't like us then don't listen to us.
save the bandwidth quota for people whom want to listen.

btw/ i have a feeling you are a troll anyway so i'm taking this
with a grain of salt.

this is the point Twothumbs

in fact it's the point of virtually all radio djing
people tune in because they want to hear the records the dj has got to play
not to hear the dj mix

set building, tension, etc. is the business of live djing, especially over a long set
radio dj mixing is more about keeping up a flow in which the records can play themselves
and this subvert central mix flows right along Yes Yes

that's how i always understood radio dj'ing. Xyxthumbs
Really really happy with both the mix and the tunes! big ups to all involved! Been on repeat in my car the last couple of days! Grin

listening now....AMAZING MIX, INCREDIBLE TUNES!!!!!!!

btw, i like how it's mixed...let the tunes breathe indeed! serves the purpose perfectly!!!
I think this is a great mix, every tune has room to breathe,
Quality tunes mixed be quality dj's,
a few things...

1) I disagree about the promo mix. I feel that the tunes should have been mixed in a way that contrasted the styles and sounds and juxtaposed them, thus grabbing the attention of the listener. When you pull off an exciting mix, the tunes sound more exciting right? you can still showcase the sounds, but you should dress them up a little so to speak so you grab the attention of the listener - not so much showing off the DJ skills as I said earlier, but highlighting the music by using it well - this is DJing at its essence right?

2) I also disagree about the distinctions made between internet radio, playing live and DJ mixes. While there is obviously a distinction, I feel that all "non live" forms of DJing (i mean the DJ and the audience not being in the same place here) i.e. recorded mixes and internet radio is an experimental ground. Here the DJ has the opportunity to try new things, experiment, not have to cater to a dancefloor. Here the DJ is free to take the audience on a journey. I dont think it has anything to do with how you mix the tunes, i.e. letting them play out or whatever - at least i wouldnt do that if i had a radio show - and if i did i would hope my audience would tune in to be taken on a journey - not just to hear the tunes i play.

3) to esb and union: I realize a n00b like me coming on this board and within my first few posts causing a rukus is not a good way to introduce myself, and i apologize. However, I feel that i am justified in saying what i said, and I feel strongly about it. But realize that while i may have slighted you, it was a professional slight and not a personal one. Calling me a troll is not called for and kind of transparent. I still occasionally listen to your mixes, but only because i want to hear some of these tunes that are so talked about and that only dubsluts have. I am consistently dissapointed with how these nice tunes are used to almost no effect - its frustrating. Continue to do what you do and build up your fanbase - I just wish sometimes ppl would stop jumping on a bandwagon and exaggerating things and listen and speak out.

Ill put a mix up for all of you to tear apart soon - and then probably create an alias to post under because the shooter name is mud already.

that depends what you want
sure a dj could experiment with the mix if that's what the audience want
personally i don't want that
in fact personally i prefer radio shows that aren't mixed at all
just tracks played from start to finish one after another
with some talking in between

Icon_eek No this board is great to discus any kind of topic,
subverts can disagree without hating,

stick to the nice alias you have already Xyxthumbs
valid comments shooter (should have left "dubsluts" out tho)....but i, as a dj (ehm yeh), would rather have a tune showcase mix where i can hear the tunes very clearly so i can already start thinking "yeah, i could do this with that tune" etc.

all a matter of preference

this mix is a musical mindtrip and that's what i like about it
shooter, even i am not a big fan of esb & union but you seem to be quite bitter towards these 2 people? one must wonder if they have wronged you in a personal fashion. this has vendatta written all over it for some reason. in any case i do not usually d/l alot of their mixes, but i did really enjoy this one as the music is splendid and the programming is well executed.

i know i will be eagerly awaiting to hear your mix. you come off sounding like you may just be the man to save this boring "dj culture". i am a fan of listening to music from start to finish. in my eyes there is no mystique in being able to count to 32. please change my views.
shat the bed lately?

let's not get carried away here
it was just a criticism
Roll
ok this will be my final comment on this subject and then i am
letting this topic slide into oblivion...

1- of course you would mix this differently shooter. last time
i checked we do not share the same brain. each person has
a different way of interpreting and analysing. to me music would
be pretty boring if we all mixed and programmed the same way.

2- as mentioned before this mix was not about US. to tell
you the truth i could not care if our names where even on there.
this was put together to showcase the forthcoming SC releases...
not to showcase union and i. i do not need the ego stroking that
much. Smile

3- over the last few months i have learned to take shit on the internet
with a grain of salt as internet tough/internet slagging is a hot new
sport it seems.

4- i like this mix and for the most part like my shows fine and dandi.
as pompous as this may sound...i do it for MYSELF first and foremost.
if i can't stand behind what i believe in how can i expect others to
get behind what i do? i have never once expected 100% of the people
to get behind what i do. i do it for ME. simple as that.

5- ...and please do not go and change your name over something very
trivial like this. everyone is entitled to his or her opinion and you voiced yours.
