Naphta Wrote:Sounds great! Doesn't sound like dance music to me though. I mean, seriously.... that's not a value judgement, just an observation....! I do think therefore, that this is an issue you need to deal with i.e. is there another format or mode of presentation that might better suit what you're at?

No, I know....... But dnb is my first chance to break in, so I am doing what I am doing - but looking for other openings at all times.

Dnb could get its head out of its arse and start appreciating that there's more to life than DJ's.

*controversial*

I see where you're coming from, for you that was limiting, but for someone like me who never was into 'raving' it was freedom. Freedom to get away from the dancefloor. Do things that don't work in a party environment (or only for very few weird people Teef).

For sure... without that we wouldn't have had (for instance) Hidden Agenda's 'Dispatches' on Headz, or Noise & Paradox's 'Transmograpfication LP', or J Majik's Innervisions stuff on the R Lovesmilie or spooky freaky stuff like Dom & Roland's 'The Planets'.... to name but a couple. I love all that stuff too... it just doesn't excite me as much as the stuff that's still hooked to the dancefloor...

Too right Nemo!

I think you would be perfectly right if you said 'Do things that don't ONLY work in a party environment', but yeah, I am one of those weirdos too Grin

i think the bottom line here, is that you should all be listening to A LOT more frank zappa.

he'll show you ALL ABOUT arranging.... Wink
I luv doing stuff with mad arrangements & structures but it's a waste of time coz no-one will buy it or sign it or distribute it.

It sucks for him cos he's a business. The rest of us can do whatever the fuck we want.

Don't forget that!

So when do you think people will except the music in question.. will it ever become something that will sell??
If you mean 'how do get people to hear to hear it?' then the internet makes things a lot easier than a few years ago.

If you mean 'how will we make any money out of it?', who gives a fuck?

Now don't get me wrong here (like Naphta always does Grin )

I want my music to sell. I want people to buy my stuff and I would love to earn money from it.

But way above all that is integrity to myself and writing stuff that I like. If I were more concerned about just making money from it I'd go and make some really cheesy shit trance and give it to this bloke I know who sells all that lark.

But I don't.

Not for the first time in this thread, hats off to Frank Zappa - a man who truly did NOT give a fuck what people thought, so long as he was expressing himself.

Gwan the Zappa!

i just mean is it ever gonna be as popular as the ram, bad company, full cycle etc stuff.. , or do you think the masses that buy all that stuff week in week out will ever start buying inperspective, paradox/outsider etc etc in the same way? or do the kids simply only know the jump up type stuff so have never really been introduceed to this style ( to them it probably doesn't sound like what they think is drum and bass/ jungle.?

sorry this is off topic Grin

Macc about the whole money thing.. it's the same for me , it aint about the money but more about expressing myself through my music.

it never can be unless you ARE making money if its your living you can be 100% creative with every tune you would only make 1 track a year
no offence to anyone trying to make a full time go of dnb, but i have to agree with macc on this one.

i had the EXACT same dillema, in an even more marginalised idiom after i finished college.

here's the scenario :

i'd been playing guitar for a good 10 years....i went to college, and got all my shit together for 3 years, serious study, 8 hour a day practice routine....the whole 9 yards.....

anyway, i finish school, and start getting into "my thing" with a group that i'd been working with, and honestly, within a month or 2 or graduation, i realised that trying to make a full time living playing original, "outside" modern harmonic jazz material was not plausable in any way shape or form. you just can't do it and maintain the level of expression and quality control.

so you can see the paralell to someone like alpha omega here, in that he's having the same dillema and difficulty with using his "craft" or his "passion" to make a living. it's REALLY REALLY REALLY dangerous to conflate the 2.....and AO, on a personal note, don't let the fact that you need to make ends meet, compromise your creative output. if you MUST make a living doing music, make music that you DON'T REALLY LIKE for your income, so when it comes time to distribute the discontent, resentment, and industry tyranny, you wont be examining drum and bass....keep drum and bass for yourself. it's what you love. don't fuck with that......seriously. there's NOTHING worse than growing to resent something that you're passionate about in the name of a socio-economic system that's FUCKED beyond measure. you NEED that segregation in your head, or you'll lose it. i promise.

and look at it this way.....where's the attraction to selling out in dnb? there is none (IMO). even the people that move THE MOST units aren't THAAAAAT rich....(when you compare them to the top dogs in house, trance, hip hop, rnb whatever)

so here's how i look at it :

a)make a living music

b)make me happy music

these 2 shouldn't be the same genre. it's too dangerous having your name in the same scene when half your output (or MORE) is dumbed down somehow in order to get signed and make money....it's silly, don't wreck your name.

so make top 40 hip hop, or trance or whatever, and MAKE GOOD DRUM AND BASS (which you've been doing FOREVER now) to have signed by people that beleive in your craftsmanship. (like me!) it would be such a shame to see you go down the dnb sell-out path....it makes NO SENSE....finacially or otherwise.
markgabba Wrote:So when do you think people will except the music in question.. will it ever become something that will sell??

Ok Grin i shouild have said will lots of people want it rather than will it sell. will they appreciate it.
didn't mean to get into the whole will it make money thing.

Applause

There must not be an overlap unless you want to end up thinking 'what the fuck happened?'

Dillinja is apparently increasingly pissed off with the state of dnb.

WHY THE FUCK DO YOU THINK THAT IS DILLINJA?????? Roll
