Hahaha - I agree, and at the same time; That's bollocks. Baffled Grin

I could go on and on - but anyone who saw me at the last Technicality when Fracture played Paradox's No Character (with loads of solo style drumming, Addict's Psalm break - 'head' music apparently) knows that it is eminently possible to go fucking apeshit to supposed 'head' music........ DSP knows! Hahaha

Why can't music make you dance AND engage your mind? Says who? Baffled

People are too ready to put something into one category or the other, and not enjoy it as a bit of both.... IMO.

ya you can either stick it in one catagory or another, but the proof is in the pudding, the punters either dance or they go to the bar to get another cranberry flavoured bacardi breezer.one style belongs on the dance floor and one style belongs at home on the bean bag.drop a head tune at the next party and prove me wrong!

to coin a phrase most people are "out of their heads" at a party

What about music that's neither partyesque nor bong compatible?

I dream of parties where that doesn't have to be the case.

The sort of places they don't sell bacardi breezer I suppose Wink

Yeah, that's right from a certain point of view........ But it's different for everybody.

One man's head music is another man's dancefloor. Most of the stuff I hear at Technicality that is considered dancefloor isn't my thing. Play some good 'head' music and I'll go fucking ballistic (and I do).

Referring to 'the punters' as effectively being one big mass of sheep is a gross over-simplification. It's not like everyone all moves like a shoal of fish to the bar, back, back to the bar, to the dancefloor depending on what tune is being played.

And @ Alpha Omega - how many times have you said about it being a job for you ('so I can't make interesting stuff cos there's no point Grumble ' to paraphrase a recent one)? Aren't you doing it for a living, selling a product to consumers? Isn't that a business? Baffled

And if you were joking - suck my balls. Grin

One one hand, I an now consciously striving to get to grips with the 'classic' arrangement, as I have come to think that it can often be necessary to learn the rules before you can break em effectively. ON the other hand, I think that hardcore and (some) Jungle's stop/start aesthetic gave the music more freedom than any other form of dance music, and that it was this, rather than any technical 'science' that really gave the music the edge.

Check any old Hyper-on-E or Rufige Kru (especially Terminator 2) for some prime examples of what I'm on about - bridges, drops, freaky little asides, switches at the 'wrong' time (according to the 'new rules of d+b', that is) etc. etc. This shit gets me excited cos it's like a slap in the face form the monotone of most d+b, but one an hardly ever hear it any more.... now we all know why so much d+b got shit.. but is there any other reason why more people making the good shit can't fuck up the straight lines a bit?

Perhaps the increased tempo makes it harder to stop/start too? Anyone find this? Or is it because fewer producers use samples as blatantly and instead try to just blend them seamlessly into the whole?

Anyone else care about this?

i do care because up until quite recent I've been crap at arranging & never quite got it right, and where I did it was purely by luck.

But I'm always up for the 'change for the sake of avoiding boredom' attitude to sequencing/arranging coz that's what made this music so exciting back in the late 80's/early 90's.

And to anyone who says it doesn't work on the dancefloor go look at what damage afx twin/squarepusher/u-ziq/amen andrews records do on the dancefloor with their schizo attitude to arrangements!

Man,I'd luv 2 get into this topic a bit more but not having the net at home means I can only add half a cents as opposed to my usual 2 Icon_cry
