how happy are you with where you are musically at the moment?

admittedly i am posting this as i have a selection of my unfinished things on loop, and have suddenly realised some of it is the bollocks Icon_yippee Icon_yippee Icon_yippee Icon_yippee

the break from doing stuff properly has done me good i think - i have waited months to feel this positive. definitely drawing on a lot more of my influences than ever before.....

the next couple of dgohn and macc tunes - Hyper / Falcon / Twisted / Icon_cry

Me too, kind of.

I seem to be coming out of a dull phase with some fresh ideas.

Only problem is eqing this amen to get it how I want it in a particular track. Not an easy task, it seems really muddy and I can't seem to get the combination of separation/lightness and 'thud' that, say, Breakage gets. Must work on this multiple outs a bit more I think.

Been listening to jazz a lot more recently, its helped me a bit in some ways.

i suppose i am happy with where im at.. i have a hell of a lot to learn to get to where i want to be . My head is miles ahead of my ability to actualy put things in to practice Baffled Ideas wise im bursting with them but once again it's putting them into practice and making a piece of music with them ideas is the kicker

Watch yer 170 Hz ish bit, ghuy...... need to keep that right when you boost the kick for thud. Always sounds like shit, that region.

Just thinking out loud is all. Smile

damn straight.

though the amen is a perculiar beast - it seems to need slightly different kinds of attention than a lot of funk breaks (though every break is different) in that to get that explosive squishy breakage/equinox/dillinja style (as opposed to a more drumfunky approach) i think you really need to be sending the snares for seperate treatment (with one snare in particular - the exit 9 snare Lol - you can really hammer the compression to get it squashed and bursting with energy), with maybe a bit less compression on the rest of the break, and then sending them all to a group channel for homoginisation.

Hahaha

you can do what the fuck you want mate Smile that's what i think.

you are talking more dynamic stuff than eq stuff though. generally in my experience the woolly/muffleywhummff bit of kicks is around 170 ish, and so that region has to be taken care of if you want to give a kick ooompph but not mmmmffff.

or something, mar thar fah kass.

I'm finally able to make music that is decent (or at least listenable) engineering-wise. Smile

Unfortunately I have forgotten how to write a complete tune. Icon_cry

I think I'll have to figure out how to not get bored by the music while dealing with all the technical stuff.

That's my experience also.
I think you can really shape the sound of a bassdrum by balancing the root frequency and (roughly) the area of the first harmonic.

that's exactly the struggle i feel i may have won Icon_yippee

keep at it, i hope it comes Smile

@ cube - i was at the lowest point the other day after deleting 3 ideas over the course of 6 hours. then i sat and wrote the best piano thing i have done Icon_yippee it just came out, maybe cos i was so low. Baffled so it can come, be patient Xyxthumbs

do you mean i should pay less attention to the eq as far as achieving this certain sound goes (obviously doing all the necessary cuts and the odd boost) and focus more on the compression, limiting etc and the relationship betweeen them?

a job for l3 methinks...Chin

No, I just mean that we are talking about different things. The eq is important, you said it sounded muddy cos you were trying to get it thumping, and I suggetsed you have a look round 170 or so.

The way you are talking about it, you might be best off setting up all your routing shit, doing a very rough eq job, then setting all your dynamics, then going back and tweaking eq to get it right.

Which is probably what you've done anyway Grin

im pretty happy with where i am at the moment - i feel my tunes have got a sort of unique vibe about them - you can hear my influences but my tracks are still pretty individual.

i'm more pleased with my enthusiasm and direction as of late, than i have been in, i'd say, the last 4 - 6 months or so.

got finished with a few old things that i've been giving out to people, and will continue to give out, even though at this point i don't really like how the tunes sound anymore.....engineering depreciation sucks. and it always seems to happen so fast! (i just have a gazillion things to learn, so it's really still leaps and bounds)

i'm a lot happier with how my ideas on the comp have been coming out lately, and i'm almost finished a pretty funky 'downtempo' (<----not sure about this term in general, BTW) number, which makes me REAL happy! it came out of me pretty quick and natural like.

i've also been into guitar A LOT more lately.....this makes me happy. i think i'm going to get into practicing seriously again, and get my chops back. i feel bad now about slacking on it......but i DID need to learn about this electronic production bizzness, so i have no regrets at all.....if anything it's led to a much more broad perspective and stepping away from it 'post-music-school' was a necessary thing for me to let the proverbial dust settle, and decide how to really disect my approach to guitar playing.

all in all, i'm hyped about music right now, and really positive about doing some great stuff when i return from my european adventure.

ps : i'm doing a recording this weekend with my guitar trio. (3 guitars) Icon_yippee i love recording.

yeah, it implies some specific stuff to me......and it's not the same as the thing i just made. the thing i made doesn't really have a conventional name that i could apply. (and trust me, i have no problem applying conventional names if they're appropriate.)

not only that, but 'downtempo' shouldn't imply a genre. it implies that it's of a slower tempo than something else.....i guess drum and bass? i don't know....the whole concept is shite.

Nah, it is all shite. It is just a term dnb net peeps use to differentiate I spose, but it seems to be taking hold Icon_evil

right now i'm feeling great about music. i've been feeling so musically creative since mid january, but i've been too busy to entirely capitalize on that. things have settled down as of sunday though, and i can't wait to become a track-a-holic this week. i'm even excited about redoing a couple mixdowns i've been putting off. i can't wait to get off work today!

Musically for me, I'm slowly hitting a sweet spot with everything I'm starting sounding better and better each time. Just finished a breaks track, a remix of one of my bros' tunes and it went the exact way I wanted it too.

Although I feel I'm getting lazier by shoving in loops and samples that I find on sample CDs a bit too much rather than digging myself. But I sure that's just a little phase. Grin

Engineering wise. Well I kinda get what everyone bangs on about on here, even when at the most techy level but it's rare I apply many of the theories to my tracks. For me I will fiddle with EQs, compression and such like until it sounds right to me. Then I will check on various different systems (as I don't have monitors), especially the car. I find my car stereo is ideal for if the tune is sounding sweet or not - it's not a good stereo, it's shite.

All the above has started paying off. I'm EQing breaks more and making more space in my mixdowns slowly but surely. Feedback from my last complete tune DAWN is very favourable (from a couple of bignames in the scene Wink) with everyone commenting on it being a nice mixdown. So I'm doing something right.

Next step, to give myself more time on music rather than fucking about doing nowt.

made a nice, well started a nice slow tune last night. 108.5 bpm Lol it's so much easyer to be creative in not following patterns of how to structure a tune as with drum n bass. I was just whacking sounds in and cutting the break out whenever the hell i wanted Grin Played it back this morning and im quite happy with it so far.

9 hehe the first bit of the breask is like beat out of the m-jackson 'beat it' song
