what are you listening to at the moment ?
your metal highlights of 2005 so far ?
any highly anticipated upcoming releases ?
know any good online places to buy metal ?
any good online zines, forums ?
labels to watch out for ?

edumacate me! Hyper

some of my current favourites :

cryptopsy - once was not

ridiculously fast, complex death metal with some jazzy bits [Image: icon256.gif]

immortal - sons of northern darkness

hey, black metal that's actually well-produced, catchy and played by decent musicians !
i bet their hardcore fans hate it.
a big bonus is that all their lyrics are hilarious fantasy bollocks in broken english, so there are no "wtf, are these guys nazis ?"-moments here.

behexen - by the blessing of satan

some brutal black/thrash(?) metal. it's probably nothing special but it gets my head nodding.

va - crushing the holy trinity

3cd compilation on the politically rather dubious northern heritage label that features some excellent raw black metal (musta surma !!, exordium !!!), along longer, more ambitious tracks with ambient and postrock influences and a great 15min+ doom metal tune by stabat mater.
don't read the lyrics unless you need a good laugh, though. Hahaha

just downloading some horna which sounds very good so far...
Been listening to older stuff around 2002, Norma Jean [Lutikris] - Throwing Myself album this past week mostly...

this is somethin I'm watchin out for:

KINGDOM OF SORROW: HATEBREED/CROWBAR Collaboration Resume Work On Debut Album

KINGDOM OF SORROW, the new project featuring HATEBREED frontman Jamey Jasta and CROWBAR guitarist/vocalist Kirk Windstein, will resume recording their debut album this weekend at Planet Z studios in Massachusetts with producer Zeuss (HATEBREED, SHADOWS FALL). 13 tracks plus a cover of MOTÖRHEAD's "No Class" are being recorded for the effort, which is tentatively due in early 2006 through an as-yet-undisclosed label. A short audio preview of the upcoming CD is available at the band's newly launched official web site.

Jasta had previously stated about the KINGDOM OF SORROW debut, "This is seriously going to blow people's minds! Steve Gibb from CROWBAR (formerly of BLACK LABEL SOCIETY) [flew] up from Miami to rip some solos and leads on a few tracks. We are also going to have two INSANE guest appearances that will definitely shock and excite people. . . Kirk is singing with me as well as playing the bass and guitar on the album, and we have both been writing and bringing ideas to the table. It's been killer!"

hey, bad brains isn't metal Nono

if you liked deathspell omega on crushing the holy trinity, then check out 'si monumentum requires, circumspice' and 'kenosé', especially the latter one if you like more voivod and neurosis-influenced approach, and don't care for the lyrical content. pre-smrc material is rather standard raw and underproduced with no catchy hooks, so i doubt you get much out of them.

i understand the function of horna/musta surma/behexen etc. type of straight up and catchy black metal and in a way respect it, but it all gets so freaking boring after two tunes. there just isn't any depth or real atmosphere in that stuff, nothing interesting to grasp and chew on. i've got tons of better stuff for background music..

btw have you checked ulver's metal records yet? Bigstick

currently on rotation: manilla road, orodruin, grand magus and lord weird slough feg (power/heavy metal), moss, worship (doom/sludge), terrorizer, repulsion (grind/death), gallhammer ( crazy amebix/hellhammer influenced black/crust/whatever, my album of 2004) and masokismi (really perverted black metal/grindcore fusion)

all wholeheartedly recommended Yes

i've checked out most of dso's discography (haven't had time for kenose yet), and i'm a bit wary of their more 'progressive' (in a metal context) work, because i've heard that kind of dark ambient/industrial stuff done countless times outside of metal.
raw black metal on the other hand, sounds pretty unique to me. the combination of high speed, primitve, hypnotic riffs and shitty production gives that stuff a strange feeling of stasis, it sounds like pissed off (instead of blissed out) drone-rock.
a satanic my bloody valentine ! Hahaha
maybe there's even a techno connection; i've seen a photo of fenriz where it looks like he has a plastikman tattoo ?!?

the thing that makes horna so great (i've downloaded ten of their releases and plan to buy their latest album), is that they lack the rhythmic stiffness of most bm. they aren't afraid to rock.[Image: icon256.gif]

erbanta Wrote:btw have you checked ulver's metal records yet?

no, as noted above i'm a bit suspicious of progressive metal by now.
from that other thread, i have checked out bunkur, though.
their cover of 'erblicket die töchter des firmaments' is brilliant, at times it is so slow and crunchy it enters fennesz/microstoria territory, but without any digital enhancement, as far as i can tell. it also has a similar warmth to it, despite all the anguished screaming.
i'd also like to think that the german radio sample that gets cut up to comedic effect is a comment on varg's politics. Lol
i have only listened to 'bludgeon' once, but as far as i remember it verges on dub at some points. nice !
btw, have you heard countess' 'gleaming swords of hate' ?
some of the best lo-fi drone metal i have heard (too bad the guy is such a nazi twat).

bingo :d one of the key elements in classic second wave bm - especially in ildjarn (hot! tip!) and darkthrone and in its numerous followers - is ambience. i think i discussed this with dak a couple weeks ago.

mainly because of this i tend to listen to black metal very rarely and when i do, i like to stick with only the best records, even though it means that i spent years actively listening to only a handful of records. i just feel like it's only worth it when i can submerge into it completely.

gigs are totally different issue tho.

* Wrote:maybe there's even a techno connection; i've seen a photo of fenriz where it looks like he has a plastikman tattoo ?!?

yea i think he has one. fenriz performs dj gigs from time to time (under the name ebolah i think?) playing mostly vocal house and techno but also a bit of everything.

but anywho i also think some sort of link to techno exists. i can't put my finger on it no matter how hard i try, but the closest thing i can come up with is kraftwerk and their 'inhuman' aesthetics.

if it's groove you want then i order you to listen to classic heavy metal like manilla road! black metal owes just as much to that stuff as it owes to hardcore and hellhammer.

you heard of barathrum?

* Wrote:no, as noted above i'm a bit suspicious of progressive metal by now.

good man! Xyxthumbs Hahaha progressive metal is horrifying crap.

bergtatt and nattens madrigal aren't really progressive records in that sense even though they sound like nothing else. most of the time bergtatt is very fast blasting and brilliant riffing with folky passages and clever acoustic guitars, and nm is just blasts and riffs with a handful of solos and very, very painful production. it's definitely not their 'progressiveness' that has struck me so hard in those records for years now but the charisma and the amount of heart - in all its flaws and moments of imperfectness - that has been poured in them.

every self-respecting sludge artist steers away from digital sound equipment :d

i love it but i'm yet to buy a single countess record Oops try also paysage d'hiver, lunar aurora, nocternity and velvet cacoon on that note. out of those only nocternity has a slightly similar pompous bathory type of feel to it, but they're all great.

and btw just what the hell do you think orlok should be singing about then? i wish to debate morality just as much as you do, but what should a tune like 'totenkopf' for example be about then if not war, destruction and blood cult? is it possibly because nazism is harder to dismiss as just harmless silliness, unlike tolkien/lovecraft worshipping or the distant and vague satanism and occultism? if you want to leave out the ideological side of this type of extreme art then that's totally fine, really, but i think not taking music seriously is a great sin, no matter what genre!
musically, i haven't heard much since the days of godflesh and early napalm death that gets to me much... some of the hardcore bands got more metal and "powerviolence" for lack of a better term, so there's a couple of bands i like who do that sort of thing... i guess i like the hardcore/dissonant/sonically extreme element way more than the satanic theatrics going on with bm.. i've been trying to get to some wierd crag between hardcore techno, industrial and metal for ages without hitting on something that hasn't been done yet.
erbanta Wrote:i like to stick with only the best records

Which would that be ?
I'm guessing early Darkthrone/Immortal/Emperor, maybe a bit of Burzum ?

erbanta Wrote:yea i think he has one. fenriz performs dj gigs from time to time (under the name ebolah i think?) playing mostly vocal house and techno but also a bit of everything.

Cool, gives me a whole new respect for the man, especially because he doesn't try to mix up techno and metal in obvious (and most likely horrible) ways.

erbanta Wrote:but anywho i also think some sort of link to techno exists. i can't put my finger on it no matter how hard i try, but the closest thing i can come up with is kraftwerk and their 'inhuman' aesthetics.

Ahh, but a big thing about Kraftwerk, which is always a bit lost on non-german speakers, is that they had a great sense of humour.
That's something I only see in Immortal, as far as bm is concerned.

erbanta Wrote:you heard of barathrum?

No, but a quick search on Metal Archives rectified that.
(worst promo shot this side of Manowar, though. Hahaha)

erbanta Wrote:and btw just what the hell do you think orlok should be singing about then?

I think he should sing about love, and sunshine, and flowers, and butterflies, and kittens, and hott boys/girls, and clouds that look a little bit like animals, at least when you squint real hard, and...and...he should wear a Hello Kitty mask instead of corpsepaint...Hyper

I'll have to pitch that concept to him.

erbanta Wrote:i wish to debate morality just as much as you do, but what should a tune like 'totenkopf' for example be about then if not war, destruction and blood cult?

Well he could stop writing tunes worshipping the SS for a start. Hahaha
Do you understand the lyrics ?

erbanta Wrote:is it possibly because nazism is harder to dismiss as just harmless silliness, unlike tolkien/lovecraft worshipping or the distant and vague satanism and occultism?

Definitely.
But all moral concerns I have about this music are eased by the fact that I'd never spend money on records by artists or labels who endorse ns ideology.
And everytime I start taking the whole thing too seriously I just look at this pic and I'm good again.

erbanta Wrote:if you want to leave out the ideological side of this type of extreme art then that's totally fine, really, but i think not taking music seriously is a great sin, no matter what genre!

Yeah, that's where the problem really lies : I hate ironic approaches to music, but bm leaves me little choice because I don't buy into the ideology.
And I don't think you can leave the it aside really, certain ideas are just too ingrained by now.
As much as I hate that sort of thing in other music, I hope someone pulls a M.I.A. with bm. Probably Sunno))).
Some of you may enjoy this Fexomat mix, pretty enjoyable and bring back a lot of memories for me!
