i know there hv bn some threads on this in the past, but ive started to see some aluminum decay on my rare/out-of-print CDs and im freakin out cos it's only going to get worse (we always seem to run from media to media in search of permanence and integrity).

soo..damn the space used, im goin to back them all up now. and i cant use .ogg much as i love it, cos i need to be able to share w/ mac and pc ppl alike. Icon_sad Icon_sad

usin CDex, what are the best settings for broad-spectrum compression that reconstitutes well (cos i hate bein the only one that has some rare ting and am always happy to share w/ interested parties), i.e., what settings can best be packed out into CD audio?
ive been ripping my CDs lately too, using dbPoweramp - rip them to wav, then convert to 320s

thats the best i can think of, mp3 seems the most universal format

it sounds like you have enough space so just keep them as wav files. anything less (apart from a lossless encoding) would be a step in the wrong direction (in my opinion, of course..)

freaken cd decay.. my computer baked all my basic channel cds..
get foobar

http://www.foobar2000.org

get flac codec

http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html

you can read the cds in foobar, use its built in freedb search function to automatically name the tracks and then convert to lossless Flac format. If you're gonna rip loads of stuff then this'll save you gigabytes, particularly if you use the Flac level 8 setting which gives the smallest file sizes albeit with the longest encoding time. Grin

yes FLAC is the best solution if you don't want to go for WAV.

mac users can use a free program called MacFlac to convert to and from FLAC.

BTW .ogg files are mac compatible too. Audacity will open and convert them.
thanks yall - flac really does look encouragin, i cant find a bad word on it. doin a listenin test now to see if i can tell the difference, just usin the computer and sennheiser hd25s (tho ive bn surprised at wot ive heard w/ these phones).

somehow the bass sounds a little dirtier and wobblier in this flaced missing foundation song, but ill test across a wide range of sound spectra - this might be too messy to hear a difference if there is one.

yay - so ill use flac for the rare/out-of-print stuff and 320 for the merely somewot-valuable. :d Xyxthumbs
