although flanagan on giant steps (the track). Oops

i can't imagine the force of realizing what was expected of him in the moments before that take......brutal.

i would shit my pants i think.

i don't buy it.
I've got an actual interview with Tommy Flanagan talking about that exact take Grin I have listened to this interview a berzillion times.

His words were somethig to this effect (fairly close but a little paraphrased);

'John sent me this sheet, and it was a chord progression, but the chords were all out of order. He sure played them in order hahaha, but they weren't in the usual order.'

'Anyway, so we get to the date... and I never realised that... that the tempo was going to be as fast as it was. I did what I could to keep my head above water hahahaha'

He knew full well - and you can hear it - that he fumbled his way round that tune. I love it, it's great Grin . You can actually hear someone as great as Tommy Flanagan being put through a proper learning experience, cos at that time he just couldn't keep up with this new new shit.

That don't mean Tommy (yeah first name terms Teef ) couldn't play - he had just never played that kind of thing before. I don't think you can listen to anything he did before or after that and say he couldn't play all kinds of changes. Tommy's a badarse but sweetly lyrical player. It's often like dinner jazz for hardcore boppers, or hardcore bop for dinner jazzers, or something.

I absolutely love Tommy Flanagan.
