where do you chop

hello subverts

i know you are all recyclers but the principle remains the same from recycle to soundforge. my question is where do you chop? any rules of thumb people stick by?
Wave

usually in my basement, that's where my computer is. Teef

closest i can get to the what i deem the 'front end' of the attack on a transient. it's usually easiest to tell if you listent closely to the tail end of the previous slice to ensure there is no overlap......then it's a matter of just zeroing right in.

particularly the end of the previous hit bit.

i'm slowly beginning to think tha that recycle is a gigantic piece of shite and that taking the bit's of a break you want using soundforge is better...it also mean's your not tempted to just lash rex files into cubase and use those....
I use Logics wave editor.
Or an old version of cooledit I have lying about the place.

thanks for the paradigmatically shifting way of looking at this. the end is the beginning (/me zens). for the front end, how much attack do you give it? do you chop at the poppa bear, the momma bear or the baby bear?

it depends on the particular slice. certain slices have some sort of little microscopic 'fluff' regions in between them......just some ambient noise really. a lot of the time it's just that the hit you're working with is just not very 'spanky' to begin with, so the transient reflects that, and you have to do a tad more work to determine where you think the start of the hit is located.

sometimes you'll be left with that little micro-pocket of a slice (between the last and next, but way too small to use on it own.....it'll just sound like a click). i just discard those after loading my sampler, and adjust in sequencing accordingly.

beckett: hells yeah son! recycle is shite and forge is definately better for getting surgical with the cuts. it's the blasted midi file that you lose with other methods. Neutral

also, i like how you can use the arrow keys when you're zoomed right the fuck in on recycle, to move from one point to the next. is this possible through other wave editing choppage scenarios?

macc: how about that 'chop mode' in the new sc? is it going to give us any solutions?

wow.....long first post. Wave top o' the mornin' y'all!
I chop where it sounds tight, fuck all the fluff n 'ambience' at the begingin/end of a slice, i just chop it so it doesnt sound late when i trigger it.
I need to rechop my sesame street as the attack on my slices are too long and it sounds gaybo Icon_sad

yeah, i agree in most cases.

re : sesame street

i like the way it sounds when it's got that 'fumbling loose' vibe to it, like in old jungle tunes. usually stuff like that bothers me, but in the case of that particular break, i usually let it ride.

making a tune with it right now actually. Smile

b0k! :d
i love that break, sounds fat and heavy when pitched down and wicked and old skool'ey when pitched up! Yes

mighty!

It's not ready for testing yet, but as soon as I can test it, I'll be taking requests from you lot Wink

I couldn't possibly use anything other than recycle to be honest... Just too stuck in my ways. Plus the tail generation is EXTREMELY handy when used right (as well as the midi file).

Most often things need tightening up in the sampler anyway, so when 'on the chop', the ABSOLUTE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY ABOVE ALL ELSE is making sure that there are no teeny weeny bits of the next hit on the end of the present one.

Ends in Recycle, starts in sampler Wink

The only slight exception to this is where you intend to fully use the midi file - then you absolutely have to make sure you are as absolutely tight as possible without leaving anything on the end of the previous one. Drum n bass and Paradox esque uber tightness render this level of care unnecessary - just tighten the cunts in the sampler (One thing SC does INFINITELY better than klontakt btw).

Hahaha Klontakt was a typo but I like it Hahaha

what would you do for a klontakt bar?
A what sorry? Baffled

You mean like a mars bar, or a snixxers bar or saaink? Baffled

na man, you've got it all wrong. it's at the beginning of the next hit.

I have never used recycle! Its for lazy people.. Teef

I even gave up on samplers after the first SX came out, I used to use an Akai S2000 and chop by ear in the key groups or single mode and trigger by midi.

Now a days I just import into an audio track and chop direct in there. I zoom in as close as possible and depending on how punchy or smooth I want the hit get as close to the peak of the attack for punch or at the beginnig of the attack for smothness and naturalness.

I like to use the ambient in the break to create a atmosphere so tend to chop as far to the end of the hits release as possible.

If the means moving certain hits to another audio track to allow the tail to breath on futher than the attack of the next hit then so be it... depending on how it sounds.

I hate it if I can hear the ambient in the sample suddenly stop and there is silence in between. Its like your moving in and out of the environment the break was recorded in very quickly between hits. Basiclly it sound stutery, unless that the desired effect of course...

Cool
^^^ do you do all your break sequencing in the arrange page with the raw audio then?
i gotta say i used to swap between recycle/exs24/midi and audio in the page, both methods have a VERY different sound in the edit..

nowadays im using a blend of bfd and 'classic' breaks but i still sometimes render to audio and chop for 'that' sound
dodz Wrote:^^^ do you do all your break sequencing in the arrange page with the raw audio then?

Yes I do all the break sequencing in the arrange window with the raw sample. If the sample is particullay "dirty" sometime I'll clean it up a little in Cooledit pro, before bringing it to the arrange page for chopping.
bobule Wrote:both methods have a VERY different sound in the edit..

deffinately... I had a brief mess around with kontakt when it first cameout and triggering by midi, but found it murky sounding compared to direct audio from SX, so have stuck with that eva since.

Been thinking of getting BFD for a while now. A bit pricey though. Worth it? EZ Drummer is cheaper, but not as many sounds...

You should try loading a rex or chopping a break in ShortCircuit and then routing the Kicks to one channel, Snares to another, etc. ShortCircuit sounds WAY better than Kontakt with drums. I actually feel like it improves the sound a bit... Once you get that down its way easier than arranging different pieces of audio for breaks if you use seperate channels for processing a break.

After I do that, I then bounce the drums and edit by audio for other stuff, but SC rules with chopped breaks Smile
i chop in recycle but i also may paste extra bits or remove shit in soundforge / wavelab beforehand, the chop should happen on the zero crossing, but somtimes if you have to much rumble in the sample you can't see it, so a slight highpass or trans-x may help chop correctly, when i say a slight high pass i mean 30hz or summink Smile

I think shortcircuit 2 is the fucking shit because you can actually load the rex and copy parts or stretch keyranges of single hits , and also edit the start end point in single hit windows, its actaully better then the current setup where you only can work with it in one rex file. (this new way in sc is a bit like the kontakt way but better still)
i so want short circuit!!!! osx or stfu!!!!
