as opposed to "i think i just heard the 3rd bar of donna lee!" or "wasn't that the line trane played over 26-2 in the first chorus?" which will occasionally lead to a Hyper

the first one would get a Neutral

the second would get a Roll

I dont steal verses just the odd line and incorparate it into the show. I consider it a tribute to my roots!Usually those that reconise it seem kinda impressed that ive referenced somthing they allready know and love.

@Macc - Your right i could just as easily have come up with my own lyrics ( i do !! ) but i enjoy referencing what i love too (not just Hip-Hop but Jazz and Reggae) !! Grin

No one has ever said that im a biter !!! Just thought id throw this on table as im always interested in these topics . To be honest this convo kind of ammuses me because surely if all you lot are making D&B you are allready copying an existing format i.e breakbeats chopped up at 170bpm ??? HUH !!?? Lol

i hear you to bits on the "quoting" as an mc issue....

i've felt racked with guilt in the past for putting a line or two of a dancehall lyric in - even if i completely alter the cadence of it all, but at the end of the day if it works and you're being creative around it and using it well what is the problem?
...it's like a bloody LIBRARY out there!!! http://twitter.com/executivesteve
wanted to bump this cus its a really interesting thread.

the tune i did on the xgn cd i chopped to bits, wrote an oboe and cello part, a new string part, and effected it etc blahdiblah

but i dont even know what the original was ( i dled it from doa)...

how does that fit in on the sampling morality scale? Icon_razz

also, was listening to the bassheads 'is there anybody out there' and thinking i really should do a massive blatant sampledelic thing - that has pink floyd, afrika bambaata, talking heads, all mashed up with a freeohfree and it was bloody brilliant, and anyone who says there is no creativity in that just misses the point. i once heard a crap joke that went whats the difference between dance music and lego ? ones brightly coloured, interchangeable, and fits up your nose, and the others ones lego. i think that concludes everything Xyxthumbs

your thoughts please ???

As we've very vaguely agreed on (did we? I'm lost Hahaha ), it's not a matter of whether the person listening knows/cares about the source, most people don't.

The question is are you okay with it? Do you feel anything when you think you've 'appropriated' a lyric when you could likely have come up with something equally good yourself without too much trouble?

I thought at first that everything from "I'm an MC" to "changed for me" was part of the verse, and was quite impressed...

nope.

timbalaand & dj quick have been incorporating 'asian-bollywood' vibes in one or 2 of their tracks but never a middle eastern influence.

at least I've yet to hear any.

speaking of which that tune quick produced for that girl on dre's label (I've forgotten her name & the name of the track) which went number one & sold millions of copies worldwide, resulted in them being sued to fuck & handing over something like 5 million dollars because they sampled an indian singers vocal throughout the track without her permission.

if they'd have cleared it with her it would have cost a tiny fraction of that & would have avoided all legal hassles..the same goes for cooli-o who sampled/resung a stevie wonder track on 'Gangsta's Paradise'...stevie (greatest song writer of all entire time in my eyes) wonder then took him to court & endedup taking 98% of all royalties & publishing from that track.

rick james-mc hammer pretty much the same thing.

the lesson to be learnt is if your gonna sample ppl's tings & be blatant expect to get the pants sued off ya!

p.s...jive bunny & the mixmasters-remember them? same thing ,didn't make a penny from those hits...but they deserved 2 b sued for sampling shit music & making it even shittier... Roll

sorry dROID,I get really side tracked at times... Smile

Being influenced by something and outright sampling it are totally different things.
Hmm, sorry to bump but I had a similar moment on Christmas Smile

Got blade runner on dvd and watched it after everyone had gone to bed, for the first time in about 5 years. What a film. But it really, really startled me how much the Vangelis soundtrack has been totally raped. So much was familiar, and not just from the obvious tunes either (angels fell etc)..

The moment that stands out is the rhodes refrain towards the end of the film that Fracture and Neptune used for Continuities. I'd always thought that was an original bit of playing. It's still outstanding sampling and it reminded me what a great song it is, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a bit disappointed.
your only dissapointment is that a part of the mystery of your love for the frac & neps tune had gone forever because you had sussed out how a part of it was done/created/composed.

A lot of music producers have this problem with music once they start producing & learning how things r done.

Simple analogy of it all is the Penn & Teller thing of showing u how tricks are done, once your shown you appreciate knowing but that 'magic' has gone forever (no puns intended)

When you analyse (or try to cover) some of the biggest rock and pop hits you'll find that they're actually very simplistic tunes. It's sort of the same thing. It doesn't subtract to my enjoyment of it though. Good things are often very simple.
