Headphone Monitoring

Alright. I've been at this for a minute....

I'm getting rid of my home stereo receiver and want to monitor my PC via headphones.
I've got an E-MU 1212M, so I've got 2 Balanced 1/4 jacks. I'm trying to keep the sound as unaltered as possible, so I don't need any eq. Dual headphone jacks is kinda a plus too. With that in mind, the ART Power Mix III or ART MacroMix seems like the most likely canidates. However, 25-50 bucks more I could get a Soundcraft Compact 4 or a Tapco Blend 6.I'm assuming you can bypass the eq, or just 0 all settings to listen to the mix as it sounds from the computer, but I'm not entirely sure. I suppose I could hook up my computer to my dj mixer (unbalanced), but I'd rather not unplug it and move it around every time I needed to play back a mix.

Any suggestons? Is there anything I haven't considered?

Forgive me being dense, but why do you need a mixer?

I have a 1212m too. I have a two mono jack > stereo minijack cable in the back of the card, then a female/female minijack connector, and my cans go into that. Sorted, and with no extra boxes/power supplies etc etc, and very very little happening to the sound. If you need 2 headphone sockets then a splitter will do, although you'll lose volume... Luckily for me I have no friends.

Budget for decent cans?
Yeah, put your money into some good headphones. I monitor from cans everynight. It's not bad. But it is worth it to use monitors to fix up things here and there.

Creative work is great on headphones, but they're not great for mixing down unless you know them really well.

huh. didn't know that would work. Like 2 1/4'th male converters to 1/8'th y cable to 1/8'th female where I could plug my headphones in?

Alas! I forgot to mention a few things.
Lets see!

I can't believe it's that simple.

On a side note, Macc, do you have a compressor or any gear outside of the pc?

I record stuff through my grandad's 1966 valve tape machine as an input channel... Either I'll just run it through it for THAT SOUNDAGRAGLRLAGALLLLLGLRAGLLL, or record it onto tape, then play it back for EVEN MORE OF THAT SOUUUDNNNNNDNNDNDNNNAGRRGLGRLAGLL... As the timing drifts a bit it's not ideal for running whole tracks through though, as I have to then re-edit everything to be in time.

And it's mono. But still... Homerdrool

That's it though...

This thread has reminded me that I was supposed to track down a stereo head...

Looks like I might have done!! Icon_yippee

The possibilities... Channel crosstalk is at 40dB in the specs, god knows what it will be on this old beaten up beauty Grin Running stereo patches through it will make me splaff though, I have no doubt.

Just thought about this thread. It wasn't that simple Smile

I only get sound out of the L ear, which is a 50/50 mix of the L & R Channels.

Still have to try it with another pair of headphones though.

Seems like your female/female connector is mono...

I like the acctualized happiness! Rofl
wow.
I was so bored I incorporated a james brown song w/ Peter II of Spain with Gary Numan freebasing while drawing a picture of what i was trying to accomplish, when the most practical solution would have been to turn the fucking volume down.

getting back on track....

the two main problems (other than ear fatigue) I run into are panning / sound origin and vinyl pops. Other than that though, I don't think headphone monitoring is all that terrible for an idea.
