i was thinking its gonna be tough with all the different ways it could go now

fair enuff your always gonna wanna eq your break so thats a given but now its like theres all the different ways youd approach the break(s) your using i.e you gonna do a straight chopped hard quantize thing or getting groovy and using recycle to maintain it etc Chin

then thats not even getting into layering different breaks toghether Baffled
Hmmm.... but that's more the sort of stuff you do your own way, which is to some degree what gives you your sound. I'm more interested in things that there's a 'right' answer to, if you get me (like the eq thing).

Which is why I am struggling - it is music after all Hahaha

A 'show and tell' thread might be good for compression (or other stuff come to that, but I've got compression on the brain after reading the recent thread).

So people can post an audio example (say, a loop alternating 8 bars uncompressed with 8 bars compressed) with a brief explanation of what they were trying to do, how they did it (ie what compressor and roughly what settings* they used and what they think is good about it), and other people can constructively criticize it / unconstructively big it up. We wouldn't neccessarily have a fixed assignment or fixed source material or whatever, and there'd be no 'right answers' (but probably a few wrong ones).

If nothing else, it'd be good because reading the threads about this sort of stuff, the terminology is all rather vague and subjective and you half wonder whether one man's warm is another man's crunchy is another man's squashed or whatever, and it'd be interesting to actually hear what people are doing.

* not neccessarily precise, but "DubzWare BarePhatComp, 2:1 ish ratio, -11dB threshold, short attack, 200ms-ish decy, fairly hard knee" or whatever

but it's chop school, not chop bloody hippy commune Teef

Like the idea Dr. Slothrop
yes, compression plz
What do people strugle with with compression?

might just be the nature of the beast, but with EQ i can hear that i ought to do such and such to it to make it sound better, and it does.

with compression its more like, hmm, now what... compressor!

i mean if something is sounding thin i'd reach for it but its more like lets fuck around with the compressor for a while and see if that helps

plus i'm still not convinced about the whole compressor/bass scenario
well, admittedly I have not used compression much for drums - or at all. I think much of this stems from many many posts decrying compression as something that is so VERY easy to screw up (thanks a lot DOA).

I guess I don't even know where to begin. lets say I have sequenced a few breaks and single hits into a drum track I am wanting to use in a tune. I create an fx channel with a compressor and start sending it to different parts of my drum track - the snare - kick - one of the breaks.. I want to give my drums punch and 'gel' them together. when I have tried doing this I go between either not being able to tell if I am effecting he signal at all to blatently squashing everything. then I start second guessing myself.

at this point I say fuck it and take the compressor off.

maybe I am psyching myself out about this? again I blame DOA. lol

also: I second the compressor/bass issue.

Yeah, that's kind of where I'm at. That's kind of why I'd be interested in hearing some 'before and after' type examples of what people are actually doing with their compressors as well as just reading comparatively theoretical discussions of what they're supposed to do.
compression definitely, bass or drums, or both.... hmmmmm.

big Chin ing going on here, ideas are brewing Cool

thanks for the input peeps, i'll see how it goes and get back to you Wink

reading this literally - if you're using cubase and you are creating an fx channel, then sending bits to the compressor, that's the root (or should i say route Teef ) of your problems. compression is an insert effect*. this is a fundamental of production!

* that's not to say you can't use send compression, not at all - but 'traditionally' and most commonly compression is done using inserts. send/parallel/ny compression is more advanced.

My problem is this. I fix things if i think they sound wrong. I don't fix them 'cause i know they could sound better. I need the experience of knowing the possibilities that a sound has.

yea, you're reading it right. Grin

see? I learned something already! nice1

Doing it the way you're doing it will sound 'better' cos it will be louder (extra signal due to the sends).

In actual fact compression makes things quieter (despite ultimately allowing them to be made louder). Put a compressor as an insert, don't touch the make up gain, do some compression - there you go Wink

Macc Wrote:Compression can affect your tonal balance, while removing or adding with eq affects your level.

To demonstrate this, get a raw (preferably a bit shit-sounding) drum break and compress

the living shit out of it, short attack (as short as you can), short release (say 50ms). Set the make up gain so that the perceived level is the same when the compressor is on or off.

Listen to how certain things - the most prominient things at a given moment - get further accentuated by the compression. The tonal balance 'jumps' around according to whatever is boss

at the time. The Kick makes the hi hats disappear, maybe if the kick rings on a long time, it gets 'cut off' by the snare, which pushes the kick to the back when it hits. Maybe the big fat kick makes the cymbals 'duck' (as it is called), and you can hear them pumping/breathing/sucking (all manner of terms get used here). So, compression affects tonal balance (although for 'normal' mix compression it wouldn't be as severe as this example).

This might be helpful. Smile

but yeah IM DOWN for compression asssignments. I still dont always use compression and when i think i may need to and do it tell i like the sound or think the sound is better with it, not sure i really understand It FULLY.. Even though its been explained to me over and over, i have messed around with it for awhile... can still be a hard concept/tool to master.

I think photek was on here at one point with tips on compression but never came thru... Baffled
