Synth/Romplers question post discussion forum time

by the hardware sampler bug, thinking bout an mpc next (one of the more modern ones)

anyone used a korg triton rack? any good? worth 400-500 quid?

Gets pretty good reviews that, never used it myself though.

Personally I'm well into the Novation Supernova.
It has a lovely sound and bags and bags of power.
Dead quick to use once you get your head around it.

Korg's are really pristine sounding...i'm not so into them as such for that price.

A lot of our favorite songs that used romplers use older romplers which could be purchased for 100 quid..so that might be good enough for your purposes.

if you are looking for something new..the Roland XV 5050 is really high fidelity and can serve a lot of rompler needs.. the Roland XV5080 has a sampler function that plays akai libraries..

what are the ones for this sorta money you would recommend?

on the cheap...the best ones would be the roland jv1080 (which is slightly better than the jv2080 interms of fidelity but the jv2080 has more features, ease of use and expandability) or the yamaha tg500.

another really phenominal rompler is the roland JD990 which has very very high fidelity and some magical filters. I wouldn't pay more than 170 quid for it.

Personally I fucking loathe the JV1080 and everything within it apart from the vibraphone.

they seem to be more round the 200 mark on ebay aswell

i had a yammaha tg500 for a while.

great for what it was, pads etc. can dl tons of sounds of the internet as sysex

sold it. only had two outputs which made balancing a pain, plus the classic 'only one effect over the entire multi' type situation which was a pain. prob not a major issue these days can bounce it down and effect to taste, or record each track with effects.

one on ebay at £56 now...

ya maybe if you use the presets...it's kinda hard to fuck up a vibraphone sound ;oP


it's a pretty handy piece of kit..and it's been used on a lot of phenomenal dnb tunes that everyone here knows and loves. I've spotted jv1080 sounds in tunes by photek, total science(when they were good), tpower, pfm, THE ENTIRE MOVING SHADOW CREW. etc etc. Omni Trio made an entire album in the jv2080.

it can...the jv990 with the vintage synth expansion card would be a better bet if you are going for that...i'm pretty sure vangelis used it for acoustic sounds in his music..i'm also pretty sure he got it for free like every other synth on the planet.

having said that...i was mucking about with the jv1080 and i made a vangelis-esque sound...I took a triangle wave and ran it through the booster which clips it to a squarewave and then i modified the phase of the booster using one of the subsonic waves resulting in a fair emulation of PWM.

not a bad analog emulation...kinda reminds of a korg poly800 or roland jx series. I need to play around a bit more. mind the clipping on the desk ha.

here's another vangelis wannabe demo from another rompler (I really enjoy recreating that bladerunner sound on any synth i get my hands on).

This time it's the Yamaha s80. Yamaha is a really good company because they use really amazing technologies before anyone (the dsp for the filter I used here is maybe the best in all "virtual" filters-if you are into that CEM sound. Also, there is a distortion insert effect that models transistorrs or tubes etc...that transistor emulation is paramount to this emulation). The only thing they fail at is the marketing and patch programming.

the S80 is the exact same thing as the cs6x(which has more knobs-i opted for 88 weight keys with aftertouch)...and it's built on the back of the EX5 series. infact most yamaha stuff post 1999 is pretty amazing interms of it's fidelity and usability. This series can have add on cards with whole new synthesis technologies (unlike roland which just adds waveform and patch data with their expansions). You can also use the effects on an external input which is a nice bonus as they are pretty lovely effects. I see the s30 (61key version) going for $200-$400.

kurzweil ftw, end of, stfu, pics or wankmeoffwithaspoon, what?

kurzweil is really awesome because of how much programming you can do with it (And i just love synth programming)..but it's output is very dark sounding. and most of the waveforms aren't really that exciting (although it's great that some of the units have sampling capabilities).
