his whistling skills naturally crossed over to the breakbeat scene of the 90's after his drop in favour during the 80's when as we all know whistling was frowned upon, in fact many a man was shot dead in the street for whistling the theme tune to dallas

ahhh roger whitaker. a true golden throat.

JUNKYARD SAMPLE CD OR STFU!

back in the day...photek used a Roland w30 sampler (which i believe Digital inherited later on) and some 8 channel mixer. and a really cheesy fx box. his studio was super minimal.

so if anything it's just a mix of some dynamic processing and clever eqing...

OK, he used 2 or 3 valve mic preamps to get that gritty, artificial, yet naturally pleasing distortion. One is definately a focusrite. I'll dig my scanner out later and try to post an image up soon.

oh not the speech, the actual synth and percussion sounds of the intro are pretty much lifted entirely from it Icon_sad

its the bit in platoon where elias goes off on his own and ends up getting killed by the mean american guy

This thread is great, I've only just "joined" Subvert despite registering years ago, so been enjoying reading some of these threads!

I've never heard of this Junkyard sample CD - im curious did anyone have a shot at doing some Photek stylings with the drum samples from it and if so have you crumbled his enigmatic genius in the process? hehe

Maybe we could all get together and compose "Form and Function Vol 3" on a sub-contracted agreement! from Mr Parkes! hehehe! Cool

A photek thread not at 10 pages yet? I'd better reply and help it on the way.

I'm sure that over the course of time it will reach 10 though...

You're right! All the low-level detail has been brought forward but the peaks aren't squashed at all! You can definately hear that on the Truper stuff.

Is this what you're describing J?

Would like to hear what results you got! Smile

Sat in music tech now, will give this a go. Smile

Also I remember scope suggesting mixing your drum track with a heavily compressed version of it to add punch, but presumably that brings out the low level stuff but also mixes in some walloping of the peaks (although the peaks would be preserved) which might make it sound a bit harsh?

You can do all sorts of cool stuff like that with neodynium though
AKA New York compression.

Useful in the right places Smile
