it's a fun song yes but the lyrics have a lot more purpose than just shocks, thrills and laughs

Statto Wrote:erbanta Wrote:it's a fun song yes but the lyrics have a lot more purpose than just shocks, thrills and laughs eehh.. sexuality in the modern society with probably as much concern about making the world a better place as genesis p orridge had, and unbarred, total exploitation driven beyond everybody's limits of acceptance? maybe you should tell me what throbbing gristle or early swans were on about? erbanta Wrote:maybe you should tell me what throbbing gristle or early swans were on about? I really don't care what they were on about. Most lyrics in music are absolute drivel; it's the manner of delivery that matters (here the screaming, shouting, leering, etc). The human voice conveys feeling in music in the most expressive and readily appreciable way, since we learn from birth how to listen to it. And it can do that while adding a melodic or harmonic line as well – or not, as the case may be.
isn't that an awfully boring way to listen to music? i mean, many talented and praised artists say they use music mostly as just a vessel for their actual ideas or message; the music in itself isn't that important and neither are the lyrics, but you really impair the work from its power if you dismiss the lyrical content just because you probably won't like it, or because it isn't as refined as some book would be.
of course i too dismiss the lyrical content of plenty of stuff i otherwise like, it only makes sense, but i don't get why it would be a good idea to do it systematically erbanta Wrote:isn't that an awfully boring way to listen to music? i mean, many talented and praised artists say they use music mostly as just a vessel for their actual ideas or message; the music in itself isn't that important and neither are the lyrics, but you really impair the work from its power if you dismiss the lyrical content just because you probably won't like it, or because it isn't as refined as some book would be. dunno about boring. If lyrics are bollocks, they're bollocks. Obviously you still hear them and respond to them in some way, but it doesn't make them any less bollocks – and no amount of self-important justification (by whoever wrote them) will make them otherwise. erbanta Wrote:of course i too dismiss the lyrical content of plenty of stuff i otherwise like, it only makes sense, but i don't get why it would be a good idea to do it systematically obviously I don't dismiss all lyrics – some lyrics are excellent. But someone shouting about blood on the floor, or cutting his balls off with my knife... what Porridge or someone says they're trying to do with such lyrics is just so much bullshit really. And those aren't too bad – at least they mean something directly, they have a direct power through the subject matter. Whereas indie band lyrics, for example, are mostly inordinate bollocks written by talentless dickheads. up to the rat club now
Porridge's lyrics currently consist of two people getting a return ticket from Wolverhampton for £12
