Yadda yadda yadda.

I see Doof's point, although the difference is merely one of terminology.

I can play the Amen break on my drum kit, but it isn't the Amen DRUMS. So from that point of view Doof is 'right'.

But the drums are a part of the 'break' in the tune where there is nothing but drums.......... In which case Phokus is 'right'.

Whatever.

I just want good drum sounds Drums

And the NT smashes the Amen for me.
0=0 Wrote:it depends on the energies behind the track.and the appropriateness of a the break..

people gravitate towards using amens because of the specific energy they bring to the track..

in Toronto we have a lot of ragga jungle nights...nights of pure chopped amens with jump up basslines and ragga samples...and that stuff goes right through me..it's just noize..

if we had atmospheric nights where there was nothing but atmo amen tunes..I would be all in it...

I guess it depends on the presentation...there are many tunes that end up being amens, sub bass, and a sparse vocal sample or pad...which is kinda boring/basic when you think about it? I like tracks to be more layers (no matter what the break)

interms of being overused...you can't really pick on a sound..because sounds can be EQ, Compressed, Expressed in so many different ways...that's like saying they use the 808/909 is used too much in house, trance, techno...

my friend interviewed Liam Howlett of the prodigy in 1994...and asked him "What do you think about all the new jungle drum and bass that's coming out?" and LH said "I love the programming..I just hate that they use all the same sounds"

that really made me think..especially when you think about how drum sounds were put together in "the experience"...it would be challenging to do that approach with a faster jungle tempo

O=O is insane.......... You'd rather listen to elevator music than proper jump up????

Theres nothung I like more than ATMOS muzak mixed up with old jump up, it kicks atmos up the ass and is the only way of killing the BORINGNESS.

I had this shit back in 97 with the London posse."what are you doin goin to metalheadz? there so rough down there. We look cooler down in Speed"

FUCK OFF

Take your 'intelligent music' and stick it up your bum.

Dont get me wrong, I have an extensive collection of 'intelligent music' but the saps that coined that phrase ruined the perception for me for a long time. Only in London.

Intelligent, ask me arse.

Gaymen break, thats what I say. If anybody wants a couple of hundred other breaks, give me a nod, I'll sort you out.

Theres more to life than the gaymen break..........time to move on and leave it be for a century or two.

hahahaaaaaaa Lol
don't worry people, jumpup's a nice guy Cool

i do love the gaymen break tho, only if they did something special with it tho...it's the energy
hahaha...I do have a lot of breaks..I mostly use one though ;oP

umm...jumpup..you have to understand...that too much of any one thing is boring...if you lived in Toronto...and went to ragga jungle parties weekly...and heard either:

a) the same tunes every week
b) 'dubplates" of tunes that sound like the same tunes every week
c) an expression..no...REGURGITATION of a formula that was fun 8 years ago..and I hate to say this...but it's dated and obsolete now...mind you..I appreciate the enthusiasm that people who enjoy it have...

to personalize this..I have 23 crates of jungle records from 1991-1995..I would say 70-80 percent of those records have amens on atleast one side of them. You could imagine how much ragga jungle...or jump up (depending on your definition) that I have...and when I hear those records...I can tell you the date and time I first heard them...they take me back to say August 14th 1994 3:30am...November 12th 1993 12:45am...etc etc..and there are times I get weary of REGRESSING to those times..

but the atmospheric stuff like PFM's "For all of us"...Streetbeats Truper Volume 3 "Hello, is anybody here?"...Jonny L "This Time (cool dub rmx)"...and I could sit here all day and type examples...those kinds of tracks I personally can never get tired of...they are just soo well crafted..and have so many more levels..

I guess..there is a time and place for everything..as long as it's not overdone...or just presented in a redundant manor..

and that's what this thread is all about...re-expressing..and presentation of things in exciting ways...and understanding and respecting personal tastes..

Word to big bird.
Who's calling me a bird?

(incidentally, how ironic is it that a thread about the over use of the amen is gonna result in the spreading of new breaks?)
I spose I better get working as soon as I get in then... Roll

And then beer!

Cheers

0+0 or ZERO ZERO or o=o or j or J or Jason or whatever

it sounds to me like you spent too much time writing in your diary about when and where you heard tunes. Its a bit freaky but none the less....

I'm aware of your ragga scene as I heard about it about nine years ago, an article I read in mix mag of all places.

Too much of anything is a bad thing, agreed. Imagine you only had clown step crap to listen to instead of ragga??

You had Ragga, you are lucky to have experienced that.

Personally speaking, I still havent heard jungle made with the same levl of intensity as early ragga. You listen to the edits, time stretching and genral artistry of these producers and you'll find a unique style. Yes, you have loads of Gaymen jump up tracks, I too tire of these but from 95 to about 97 is a period of rollidge that has never been equalled.

The cats that made the tracks, in most cases anyway, were dripping with street cred. the cats that talked up the Atmos. sound were in most cases snobby kids who where pie in the sky eletists and any interview I have ever read they put down the jump up sound.

BALLBAGS, thats what I say, bunch of BALLBAGS

Thank christ it didnt take off here in Dublin. We knew that it was all about the dance floor and the vibe in the club. We dropped 'atmos' tracks were we thought they would work and it has worked. Our sets are the most varied out of any other DJs we ever had from the UK or where ever.

MIX IT UP KIDS

Big up Breakage who is one of the only cross over producers that understands the dance floor and the Atmos sound.

Of course there are others but there not signed to Bassbin

BOH
goin all out, I'm goin all out, I've got to maitain...
i agree, jungle music is all about contrasts and duality... doesn't mean you should play disco + clownstep + trance + techno dnb... that's not varied cos it's all shit music :P
Producers:

Stop yappin and make some beatz! Drums
