well personally i used
roland d10 la synthesis keyboard
atari running cubase v2 i think
amiga runing octamed
8 bit sample kru innit
lots of cool synths tho it was on the verge of VA but not quite so stuff like the Korg WaveStation SR, Yamaha SY-85, Ensoniq ASR-10, Roland JV-80 and Roland R-70
but of course a whole load of stuff was made in the 20 years previous so i guess alot of people would be using mainly old late 80's kit.. thos synths above would have been well expensive..
typical synths:
sci pro-one
all the junos
moogs etc, anything analog basically
some horrible digital rubbish like the korg M1 / yamaha DX-whatever for pianos and cheesy pads.... more interesting digital synths like the roland JD800
samplers:
mostly akai s950 / s1000
drum machines:
more 909, less 808
alesis HR10 A/B
sequencers:
alesis MMT8 or
atari 1040ST running cubase or pro24 or
amiga running some tracker program like octaMED
misc:
roland w-30 workstation
digidesign soundtools on mac
i loved my MMT8. so limited by todays standards but awesome for loopy techno. shitty membrane keypad sucked though.
oh yeah, the 303 was still popular of course.
and the 303 clones....
akai s1000
Atari 520 st
Cubase

Lets make d+b special for 2009!
I started on Screamtracker in about 95 or 96
these are the real classics released that year: Korg WaveStation SR, Yamaha SY-85, Ensoniq ASR-10, Roland JV-80
the sy-85 was a monster for pads and the wavestation was pretty cool too but you gotta hand it to roland - the jv-80 line continued till this very day and i guess pretty much every decent studio had a descendant at somepoint.
yes these were brand new so i doubt many people had them for productions till following years..
wilshy get into the sy85 man!!!
I was quite shocked at how good it sounded when I powered it up last year. If someone could point me to a good tutorial on programming AWM synthesis I'd love to get into it.
Just all samples with envelopes on top in my eyes.
and.. how could i forget?? -4trak tape recorders, broken and fixed so many times over lost count.. favorite one was a tascam, but usually had a yamaha cuz they were easy to fix.. i miss 4 trax
