i should have been in bed two hours ago, but i've been geek checking the raft of new stuff that's found its way to me recently... got to know what does what, eh
so here's some thoughts, just so i don't forget
waves api bundle - nice pleasantly chunky-sounding, and i like the compressor (although i imagine they aren't anywhere near the hw). awkward handling though, silly knob behaviour which will take a while to get used to. worth using, although i haven't properly caned them, so time will tell...
urs channel strip pro - disappointing. perhaps i've misunderstood something, but i'd been led to believe you could drive the thing as you would a proper pre, for all manner of juicy warmth and pleasant harmonic distortion etc etc. well you can't. what you get is a selectable input stage that puts a subtle eq curve on the source according to the model you choose useful, yes, but not what i was hoping for . the eq behaves quite nicely too, with the year options giving different behaviours (same eq algorithm i think, just affects the shape of the band). the sound is okay, useable. the compressor seems okay but kills things a bit on most of the settings i tried...
waves v series - disappointing. i have to mention these in comparison to the uad plugs as they are emulations of the same (neve) devices, sorry :d. the v series eq's are alright, and i'd use them if i needed to. however for the same amount of boost as the equivalent ua plugs, they sound irritating quite quickly rather than smooth and classy. i'd use them if i couldn't use a ua version for some reason (insanity, possibly). the compressor which is supposedly a 33609 rip off is not all that, and comparisons to youknowwhat don't show it in a good light. it's a decent vst compressor, yes - but it's not a 33609.
speaking of ua plugs ;
uad precision maximiser - been getting into this beasty a bit more. there's a number of configurations you can get out of it for assorted harmonic addition (limit mode is dirt), and when you work it it does smooth distortion on individual tracks (bass!!) better than most plugs i can think of. and if you use it in mastering things get very loud, very quickly.
uad helios 69 - fuckin ell best top end on any plugin ever. even beats the 1073 for me, very different sound though. and when the bass band fits the source, jeebus. incredible plugin.
uad roland space echo - yeah yeah yeah, i know, but if you own this, do the '100% wet tape distortion' thing on a 220hz sine wave, and check out the view on a spectral analyser (span ) as you fuck about with the input gain. just look at it!!
sorry about mentioning ua plugs on the wrong forum all in the name of science
