looks like i might be needing some cans soon
walls in new place are shite.
looks like the 600 are the ones to go for in my budget, with an amp.
i need so much, control surface, headphones, amp, ableton 7, cubase 4...
decisions decisions.
although might be able to wangle a deal for buying lots of stuff.
Just looking at the ariatta amp you like bob
Whats the impedance ? Its got to match the headphones, correct ?
Since youve done the groundwork with research and testing, might just follow your example!
Ta
it doesn't have to match exactly; it needs to be able to drive cans of a certain impedance. the arietta handles the 300 ohm hd600 easily
as i think i said at the time, i checked the rme headphone out (75 ohms) against the arietta for about half an hour. the rme sounded a bit grainy, *kind* of like driving a cheap desk, like it was working hard. the arietta sounded like it was a piece of piss, and in order to match the levels the arietta needed to be turned low.
the arietta was also a tiny tiny tiny smidge warm - and possibly may have warmed up a little more as i've broken it in - but smoooooooth.
as things stand now though, i am getting very close to knowing when things sound right with the 600/arietta without references. not quite there yet, but it is simply and unavoidably a matter of time. but yeah, the score is that when things sound big, warm, fat, clear, open in the mids and very smooth and relaxed at the top, you have a good mix.
initially - after almost 10 years on 270's!! - the warmth was the biggest 'problem', then the tops - i was used to hearing way less low mids and way more tops. now (thanks nic) i am really starting to adjust, and the along with the crossfeed, the sky is the limit...
i never thought i'd say it, but i wouldn't go back to 270/280's for critical tasks now. the 600's are fucking amazing.

forget it... until you can afford this.
i am so close to buying two racked summit audio feq-50's literally right this fookin second. but i am going to hold out for the gyratec. stay strong bob
btw @ pdx, get that thing to me for saturday morning at the latest if you need it saturday. i am unlikely to be able to do it until friday night cos of this boring work shit, but i am likely to be hammered on friday night. so it will be saturday morning, first thing (9am i reckon i'll start work, got loads to do)

Had you considered knocking up some sort of applet that actually gives you a countdown in terms of hours:minutes:seconds:hundredths of a second of overtime until you can afford it?
just look the other way and go ladeedadeeda until a few birds come home to roost.
then splaff my money jizz all over that luscious eq's pouting face.

when i went to get some hd 280' the other day they were out of stock so i got some samson rh600's instead
theyre not bad the low end on them seems nice and their (supposedly) true reference rather than adapted for good music listening, but im not convinced
curse my insatiable need to spend money i cant really bloody spend
What'd you go and do a silly thing like that for?!? Take em back, and get the 280's online!

I just noticed they arent even on the comparison selection in the first post
i was stoned obviously
:d

just got my sennheiser 280s and the difference between my old headphones is mind boggling. im so excited to work on them i almost want to call in sick to work tomorrow (but my wife/wallet/etc would not be happy with me :P)
anyway, i felt bad for a moment that i hadn't upgraded earlier, but then decided that if i received them any earlier i would not have been trained well enough to understand how awesome the difference is.
mad thread. mad site.
lol @ ipod earbuds

ok then funbag crew, anyone seen the hd600s less than £155 delivered (to/in the uk)
if not ill have to give the money to turnkey
£154.98 delivered to be precise.
cheers all
ill be ordering, with a meier amp (cheers mac for research)
good luck with turdkey mate...
oh, follow the break in instructions on the meier site! personally i'd say to not even put them on until you've broken them in - although i gave in myself :d i was initially disappointed soundwise, but after break in...
set up a pretty bass heavy mix (with some other stuff thrown in), set it on repeat at normal levels, put the cans in the box and let them go all day. then nudge it up a bit every day until after about a week or more it is ear-bleeding (don't actually listen to it!!).
another hint i have found useful is sort of like k-system monitoring. i have set my amp to a certain level and do not touch it. then i set my rme out volume at -9db for mastering and -6db for mixing (totalmix presets ).
it's tough not to move the amp sometimes, but monitoring at consistent levels = if i do want to blast it i can just nudge it up on the rme.
imho you've made a very good purchase - just allow those cans time, and allow yourself to get into them. i am on the cusp of just trusting them (and myself with them) implicitly

You mean 380 - but I think it is 500.
That's what they put in to test the THD!
