"....Going in the right direction....."

23 Replies, 6096 Views

Having read the Danny Byrd thread and numerous others over the last couple of years I'd like to know what the often used phrase "going in the direction" means to the members here when pertaining to the type of music being produced.

It's not that I don't know, more that I'm confused as to the reasons behind it's use.

To elaborate:

If "going in the right direction" means to produce music which is different from the popular or mass sound, would the increased production of such a sound not lead to it becoming the predominate and common sound and therefore no longer "subversive"???

Moreover, would the music so many of us cherish loose it's lustre if it were to become everyday currency? I'd freely admit that there is something inviting about being part of something that is not easily sort out. (harder and harder to find in these days of the interweb)

I guess my point is this: Let people produce what they like - if you're in to it, great! If not, too bad. There is no right direction in which to go, only the direction you are going.

Long live variety.

I'm all about taking wrong directions!

LOL - they a directions which are merely contrary to the one in which you are or wish to travel in.

(I'm deliberately being obtuse here you understand)
I think you think about it too much.
If anyone here is desperately trying to be 'subversive' and that means not making the regular and ditching a style when it becomes popular that is clearly homosexual.

In regards to the Danny Byrd tune, if I said it (and I might have), I mean its the right direction for me personally.
As much as I love Subvert Records and the more 'out there' tunes by Martsman or ASC (merely for example), I love classic subs and amen jungle 100x more.

And after years and years of shit in D&B, if the new direction and fad is simplistic bass and proper breakbeats again; its gonna be very well accepted by me.

Still, I wouldnt worry about it.
By your definition of 'subversive-ness' its never gonna be popular or successful so there really is no pleasing you, its always gonna be deep deep underground
i think it would be rather amusing if what people on here deem as "subversive" suddenly became the new rave fodder....

would this place change its name to "accepted central"
lol beckett

I reckon most people would stop posting on here too.
Maybe set up a new forum pioneering new forms of clownstep

maybe I do, but it's an interesting thought none the less and I have alot of time on my hands presently as i am working my notice period at work.

If anything though, my initial post was trying to express exactly what you've just said. "it is what it is, listen or don't listen"

Also, I wasn't defining anything I was asking what the definition might be.

Every forum is the same though. People with passion for what they like and often a very unopen mind. You were probably very much the same once. I went through my phase of being like that around 2003-06 but now I just don't give a toss. If I like something I buy it regardless of who it's by. If there's a market for it, then use that market.

I'd give up my day job in an instant to be a part of Pendulum, for instance. I draw the line at utter trash that is the true wobble that we know and love for it's cheesiness - see 90% of Hazard, Gen Dub, Clipz etc output for the past x amount of years.

Opera + d&b has been done Wink Check the Beat Ranch forum.

Ant & Dec on the mic at the next Technicality or STFU.

They would simply rock the mic. Teef

Wilsh I cant imagine you ever not buying anything because of who made it?

For instance if Clipz made The 9th Hand, despite how much I hate his stuff, I would have bought it and loved it all the same.
dont think, just do.
