I miss PARTISAN Records
#1

Man, I adore PARTISAN...

Perfect Combination, Banaczech, Future Engineers, KMC etc... damn... my favourite label of all times!

Even today I find myself buying records that at some point reminds me of that sound...

BTW I have this thought Icon123 that PARTISAN actually was the first leftfield dnb label Icon_exclaim

Quote from Media on DNBA

Quote:It was started by Caroline, who used to work for M.S. as a sort of label secretary, when she 'left' the label. She was bubbly and likable enough.

She obviously knew alot orf the artists well and so pulled in some favours for her new Partisan label.
The problem was, the music (no matter how nostalgic we want to get) was never that great. Bar a couple of alright ones, it was decidely average, as most artists gave her stuff that was sort of 'lying around'.

The problem was, that she was signing anything she could get her hands on and signing too greater volume. She also seemed to base her pre-sales on Moving Shadows' and would just press some ridiculous amount.

With the volume of average stuff being released at a frantic rate and only selling half of what was pressed.....well, you do the maths.

Ive got absolutely shit loads of this stuff lying around at home, somewhere.

Pure quality label, very experimental for the time,
Have all the releases except for a few....

some absolute gems on there… Cool

very interesting comments there and ones which sound real......

they did have a lot of releases out and some leftfield tunes were put out, I wouldnt agree that artists gave her there lesser quality tunes.....they were not dance floor dnb or tunes that were likely to sell 1000's but they all had a certain experimental sound and something different from what other labels were releasing at the time..
Plenty of breaks and atmospherics

Quality tracks for me were:

Future Engineers -Life Support / Cerulean Seas

Justice - Mauve Flow / Switch

Banaczech - Deceptive Emotions / Ipcress File

Foul Play Productions - Synthetic Bitch / Golden Gate

Total Science - Espionage / Network. Probably my fave TS tune of all time!

Future Engineers - Closed Circuit / Tsunamis. FE's best 12" EVER IMO.
top top quality!! Cool

Foul Play Productions - Risk! / Swell. Check the vocal on risk

Paradox - Too Dissimilar / Idiosyncrasies. One of Dev's best releases on a label other than his own.

Foul Play Productions - Redrum / Maximum Risk

The Nu perspective EP is also the bomb, some jazzy vibes on there for sure!!

Would be interesting to know the full story behind the label and it sad demise

@esb, Can you post the interview up please!?

that's mostly bollocks isn't it?
it was started by everyone who fell out with Rob Playford, not just Caroline
Si Colebrooke (2 Bad Mice) did the A&R
the music was was far better (in subvert terms) than most MS releases at the time, though very likely didn't sell as well since it was going against the trend of dnb
Partisan went down when One Little Indian ran into trouble and dropped a load of labels; and then the Truelove Collective did the same
but ok, probably they were pressing too much and it ceased to be financially viable in the end Icon_sad

Yes, this was a great label, which at the time I think I underestimated.
Some top-notch releases.
Cerulean seas by Future Engineers is still a favourite, it's just beautiful, and the tsunami/closed circuit EP is just pure class.
You couln't ask for much more from a label at that time personally, releases from Banaczech, Justice and Tertius, Deep blue, Paradox, and didn't Klute do one as The Spectre?
This is making me want to get back home and delve into my tunes instead of being stuck here at work!

ahh, memories Cool

That's right Statto. Sean (Deep Blue) told me himself, that it was him, Simon & Caroline that were involved from the outset. I think she was the 'spokesperson' for the label though, or so it seemed.

tertius & deep blue - affirmative is a piece of thick techy niceness, its a shame that the bass aint as fat as in other similar tunes

First Partisan release was easily the bestest.

generally i love each and every release... but

my favourite is Perfect Combination - Friction / Branchin' Out. pure leftfield!
its always in my bag... and in my sets, it complements with Counter Intelligence, Subtle Audio, Medschool and Subvert Central perfectly!

ps especially it goes well along with Fracture & Neptune - Planet 13 Wink

Partisan is one of THE reasons I stuck around with dnb at the time too. And it's the source of inspiration for building the Counter Intelligence label, together with Certificate 18, Reinforced and Good Looking.

Superb label which I missed totally back in the day when it was operational and I was starting out buying rettles. However to my defence the shops in my neck of the woods didn't store em and online buying was difficult for me since still being a teenager I didn't have a credit card back then.
