hmm i've been trying to follow all this since it started, and there are a few things that i don't quite understand. how come everyone is harping on about russia being some human rights abusing mo-fo who started kicking off, when it was georgia (as far as i can tell) who invaded south ossetia in the first place and started this whole thing off?

just a cheap low blow by a handful of crap politicians to demonise russia in favour of western interests in the region? Chin
just takes the international flack off America for a second.

all about the oil pipelines this one.

well, and the fact that Georgia is a member of NATO which (a) pisses the russian off bigtime and (b) means the US and Europe are bound to stick up for them.

Still though, what were Georgia thinking? They must've known the russians would come at them.

The worst part is to see the ordinary people suffering. It must be shit to be a pawn in the big game.

seems like that, yes
Georgiai isn't in Nato, but it wants to be. If it was, and Russia started pounding the shit out of it, the US would have been a bit more, er, active, in their response.

On the eve of it kicking off in South Ossetia, Saakashvili had offered the South Ossetians a ceasefire in return for more autonomy, which obviously went a bit pear-shaped.

Interesting side point - Russia has been giving Russian passports to South Ossetians, thus providing them with an excuse to 'defend their citizens'.

to the last one: apparently not
Russia has been encircled by the West as more and more eastern European states (and Turkey) join Nato. The US missile defense 'shield' planned for eastern europe (Poland just got a bunch of patriot missiles to sweeten the deal) is intented to prevent Russian retaliation in the event of an American nuclear strike. Nato membership for Georgia was put on the table recently, and Georgia seems to have taken Bush's 'we are behind you' rhetoric seriously, hence the madness of the invasion of Ossetia which gained de facto independence in the early 90s.

Basically, Russia is sending a message to the West that the aggressive Eastern expansion of Nato will not be permitted to extend to the resource rich Caucasus.
good read: How Georgia fell into its enemies' trap
bit of a background: Q&A: Violence in South Ossetia
link i posted here couple of weeks ago: Why the Kremlin Is So Scared of Ukraine - explains a bit why is Russia (Putin and friends) so desperate

you can also say, that this show is mostly for local audience, to drive away the focus from problems. Russia has been picking fight with every neighbour now, glorifying soviet times and leaders, keeping the World War 2 in religious state (anyone, who's not with us is against us and also fascist).
personally i feel like back in 80's, when i watch Russian TV channels (officials). like being back in Soviet Union - everything is state approved propaganda about how awful is this capitalistic western world.

and in the middle of these militar and political conflicts are simple people, who just want to live in peace. not to fight and not 'defend their views'. how sad it is to be a part of mass-tool for lousy politicians?

no end in sight...

Yup, the bear is protecting it's new found wealth. Only problem for the bear is that in 20 years or so time it will need to make friends and fast once its finite resources near exhaustion, and how the country is structured in terms of the distribution of wealth from the oil and gas reserves cannot last forever.
