lately i have been listening to a lot of heavy shit, like master of reality by sabbath, high on fire's most recent album, helmet's meantime and the sword. i'm strongly considering buying a super van & replacing all my vinyl with 8 tracks.tell me, is serato coming out with an 8 track emulator?
does anyone dig the retro stoner rock bands? both high on fire & the sword are totally doing it for me lately.

i'd say for good brainless retro stoner rock man, listen to Nebula or old Fu Manchu or some Man's Ruin releases instead of The Sword. or for some awesome old rocked-out Sabbath vibes try St. Vitus, Count Raven.... The Obsessed.... i dunno, high on fire these days is more like vintage metal - motorhead, venom, celtic frost etc. etc. - i definitely wouldn't call 'em stoner rock. fuckin' great band though!!!! aggh....
watch out dude, stoner rock is immensely popular with douchebag scenesters - avoid any band with members under the age of 25, who formed no more than 3 years ago, and whose name contains words like "thunder", "steel", "fire", "blood", "mountain", "horse", "hoof", "flame", "power", "acid", "snake", or "black". chances are they were Converge wannabes before they started smoking weed.... i'm not in Boston anymore but i'm appalled whenever i go surfing on myspace by the number of hardcore scenesters who have traded in their stretcher earrings for Drug Rugs and headbands and now call their bands shit like "BloodFist" and "Flame Temple" blah... blah.... just go back at least 20 years and you can be sure that it's marginally more genuine.

Just picked up John Spencer Blues Explosion album....don't know if it's "stoner rock", but it's damn good to listen to whilst getting stoned.

no, it's totally cool...fair play.
i know about the hipster aspect to it. i went with a friend of mine to see the sword & dug them enough. they're sabbath lite, but they put on a good show-some nice twin guitar action too...we got into a conversation about the very same thing after the show-the hipster stoner rock crossover & how they seem to have that tag stuck to them.
what's that group? wolfmother or something? total shit. there's a lot of that sort of deal about-spot on with that call. i dug fu manchu well enough, and some of the early monster magnet stuff too...and helmet. but i don't know if they're quite stoner rock. just heavy. i rate death is the communion by high on fire a lot.
the truth is, crack out some ronnie james dio era rainbow, any of the ozzie era sabbath albums (particularly masters of reality) for the real deal. or hawkwind...but that's some real tripped out shit. silver machine!!! hell yeah!
btw-do read the lemmy biography if anyone can get a hold of it...a really quick read but totally entertaining.

Nebula actually didn't work for me that much. but Pilgrim Fathers was the shit! the short 30 minutes they were on stage was worth coming to show early - really great live band. bought their album too.
on the other hand Monster Magnet was also very good. except from Wyndorf being way too fat... even Jim Baglino (bass player) said they'll come, when they get Dave in shape.
