littleNemo Wrote:Do you have to subscribe or is it possible to pay per track/album?

it's subscription

I'm on 50 downloads a month for £12
which works out at 24p each

they're variable bit rate mp3s, mostly in the 192-256 range
but that's fine for me Smile
yeah - I've been a subscriber for nearly 2 years now I think.

Got LOTS of good stuff on there.

some of my favourite finds are people like :

Antonelli,
Ø (Mika Vainio)
AM / PM
Paradroid
Arpanet
Abstract Groove
Jake Mandell

and that's just a quick list of some of the people I hadn't heard of before joining that I have now.

Subtle Audio catalogue is on there too, in case you didn't know Wink

Are very long tracks counted as 1 download? I mean, is Pauline Oliveros' 4 Elecronic Pieces only 4 downloads compared to a Nasum album with 38 downloads?
littlenemo Wrote:are very long tracks counted as 1 download?

Yes

i just downloaded klaus schulze - timewind
track lengths 30:32, 28:38, 38:48, 12:44, 4:57 = 5 downloads

i'd guess that lps with 30 second tracks don't get downloaded very much Wink

Hyper

I guess I'll try out the 25 downloads for free.
Only thing about EMusic was some of the tracks I got a while back seemed to be sold at lowish bit rates... like at 180 kbs VBR mp3. But I notice that in the last few months, the bit rates are generally much higher than that. Often 320's and usually at least 224.

Dunno if the older stuff on the catalogue will be bumped up in bit-rate though ?

a lot of mine are
but I don't care about that Smile
Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, VBR you have no choice over bitrate. If a tune can be compressed further to a lower bitrate I believe VBR does just that. Some tunes need to be at a higher rate due to the way MP3 deals with getting rid of data (lossy compression). Unless you use CVBR which allows a high er bitrate to be specified.

That might be why some are low Conor. Then again I may be talking drivel. Grin

possible I'm sure...

anyway - there was low constant bit rate examples too - but the general quality seems to be improving (unless I've just got lucky with the last few months worth of downloads)
plus

merzbow - antimonument / cycle / electric dress / oersted
pink floyd - london 1966/1967

probably their best work, although i haven't heard the latest 'live' album.
