So has anybody read the latest copy of future music?

They have a feature on Photek's Modus Operendi, where he mentions that the Smoke Rings/Rings Around Saturn break was the hardest he ever made...
Yeah he keeps tabs on SC Photek related discussions as a point of reference; noting which hot topics will make the most stimulating chit chat in interview scenarios.
Does he go on to talk about Peperamis and his struggle with MSG addiction?
Hahaha
Im 100% sure that the original stuff was an accident. He was young, and experimented with the sampler. Reverse or something or stuff like this, resample, etc. ,and bang.
I almost seeing it : "Man...that sounds great Grin "

In case if you read this topic again and again, you will find that it doesn't matter what was the original break.
The key is the way how he resequenced the original one. He used the plastic jam, the think, apache a lot.

But the key is the reseqence and the effecting. (Some weird distortion stuff Grin)
"......I think its made from bits of Elvin Jones, Max Roach...."

"... I think I pieced it together with a whole new swing. There are bits of Mark Mondesir from Courtney Pine's band. He really blew me away..."

That is bold of you to be so sure of such a ridiculous statement.

I'm 99% sure you're completely wrong Hahaha
Nah man. You've got it all wrong.

It's the plastic jam percussion sampled through a cardboard box smeared with jam on one side and filtered through a venetian blind.
The kick was a high pass sample of phil source knocking on my door.
The snare was from the think break layered up with me opening my new packet of cornflakes and also a crisp being crunched up inside my ginger mouth.
Ghost snare was provided by mum sighing when I asked for more syrup on my porridge and then reversed over grooverider snorting a line of chang.
Knew it.
The Don is here...finally Grin

Anyway. Maybe I was wrong. Just think about it...how many great ideas came from accidents in the studio? Grin

Photek used that secret ninja method in lot of different breaks, like the plastic jam, the think, the apache, so the key is the technic (2 swords maybe Grin).

BUT.

There is a secret break. You know this Rupert. The break on Trans 7. The best example Grin

I always thought that for K.J.Z he sampled some Mark Mondesir drums. check this

Sounds like a very similar kit to the drums in K.J.Z especially the splashes.

Lol
KJZ is a Buddy Rich sample, isn't it?

Anyway. Mondesir? Hm... The main break, what we lookin' for couldn't be Mondesir.
Why?
The first release with Mark Mondesir drumming (from Discogs) is from 1986, the guy born in 1964.
So. Fracture sad, the break is from a funk record, back from the '70s...
...I'm totally confused Grin

I know it's not Mondesir on the main break you are looking for.

Was only talking about the K.j.z. drums as Mondesir was mentioned aboveSmile

Absolutely !!!
Grin
I've read the interview in FM...
I've got the whole Elvin Jones, Max Roach and Mark Mondesir discography...if I can't find a good break in there I'll give up Grin

Seriously, this break is killing me. I finished my last full tune in 2009 december, when I started to "hunt" for that break. Since that time, I can't find any breaks what inspire me enough to finish a tune Icon_sad

I know, maybe Im sick or something like this Grin ... forgive me Grin
SECRET SOLVED!!!

So.
This TRUTH(!!!) based on the interview with Photek, the post what he did here and my never ending investigation Grin

There are 2 breaks. Let me clear this.
The first one is a sampled beat, used on Ni ten, Trans 7, Fifth Column, etc., I don't know anything about it, only what Fracture wrote here.

The second one is the break in Rings Around Saturn, UFO, Hybrid, Aleph 1, etc.
This is a "second generation" break, made from 2 (100% sure) or more layers. If you listen carefully you will find a lot of ghostsnarerolls in the beat in RAS and UFO, you will find that those came from PLASTIC JAM. The other break is Think. Simple. So The key is the resequencing and the processing.

If you dont believe me, just slow down those tracks, you will here the think tambs, and the plastic jam snare.
The only thing what I know is that Photek used some crazy distortion effect on the breaks, and "pitch shifting".

I will post my results, I will make my own versions, fortunately I have the Think break in 7", and the Plastic Jam record, so will sample the whole stuff with my E-Mu and start work...
You lunatic Hahaha let it go and get on with finding your own beat Drums
I will Grin

I figured out it is more funny, if you use samples from both scratch (cd-s, packs) and classical breaks to create your own beats.

The key is the sequence. And in this point. I don't know what kind of break did Fractures buddy found...

(simple PT7 sample based project, uad-1, nothing was sampled, just scratch Grin)
