Ableton: Do any of you guys use it to make beats?

Nope...

You have to set up a new track and direct the midi to the other track.
You could do that using groups, and use the group launch button (in session view) as a work around.

I use ableton purely for chopping up breaks. I find it is great for this sort of thing. I just stick a single warp marker on the first hit of the beat, set it to repitch and then tweek the tempo so that it sounds right pitch wise at the speed Im going to be chopping it to. Then just drag the wav into the aranger and line up the hits by eye against the grid. You can pull back air from the start of 1 hit to plug gaps from the last hit if you have em etc. For me its the easiest way to do it as I can see whats going on. thats all I use ableton for though, either rewired or bouncing out.

Ableton is great for live performances, however IMO it isn't quite there yet for production. Things like the lack of audio editing and having to switch to the session view every time you want to do something simple such as changing the volume of a track make it very annoying to use.

All the mixer functions for each track are to the right in sequencer view and are colapsable via the M button to the bottom right so no need to keep switching between views.

This is true, but it is much nicer to user the long throw faders in session view... would be nice if it was possible to pop open the session view especially when working with 2 screens.. It is a feature many have asked for.. so fingers crossed.

Roll Two years using ableton and never fucking saw that! xD

I actually returned to this thread to edit my post as I just figured this out today by accident. Lol

Nevertheless... I stand by my original comment about Ableton not being ideal for production use: There is almost no audio editing. No tools to do the little available editing, like "split" (Ctrl + E). And I much rather like the "inspector" view of the selected track on software such as Logic and Cubase.

Bear in mind, I am using Live 7. Live 8 may correct some of these shortcomings.

hated live the first time i used it. i also didnt read the manual first

after reading the manual, switching the view to arrangement Oops, and turning off auto time-stretch I found Live alot less disagreeable. It seemes a little more intuitive than cubase.

I never got around to checking out if there was an automation function similar to Cubases vst automation.

it seems nice, but i. i still run an old version of cubase on an even older computer.

yup.. tried out the beta and it seems amazing.. but I really cant justify the time or the money needed to fully get into it.

People have even loaded emails into clips to demonstrate what is possible.. hehe..

There is an example using a web camera for theremin type stuff as well...

I reckon it is worth waiting till they release a runtime version so we can nick other peoples good stuff Smile

Did 3 years on Ableton Live before moving to Logic. I prefer the sound I get from Logic but the work flow in Live is second to none. Super creative, super quick. Being able to jam your main loops to build some crazy arrangements is the thing I miss the most tbh.

I started with Logic, went to Live because it was so much quicker for editing breaks and now I'm using Logic more than Ableton. Logic has a much better sound quality than Live and it crashes on me way less than Live. I haven't tried Logic 9, but from what I have seen, it looks like Apple is slowly catching up to Live for its quick creative capabilities.

I just explained Ableton Live to my 60 year old dad in 20 minutes.. in ten minutes he recorded a bassline, some guitar riffs (and solo) and put a drum line on it ... This man can't even search google proper :-p Try doing that with any other (serious) DAW!

So whats the best way to chop beats? chop in session view or arrangement view? chop in session and slice to midi? or do you use the arrangement and then drop hits to impulse?

TONS of people having crashing issues with 8.1.1 by the sounds of it tho... and i bought cubase 5 last year. (for 3x the price tho... )

seems a shame to miss a bargain and they do seem to be on the case with fixing things, do like the way ableton works, escpecially since been getting well back into 303/909 loop type stuff think ableton would be perfect for that.

Chin

2 days to decide.

off ill at the mo, will try the demo of 8.1.1. see if it crashes much.

cheers
