Ableton: Do any of you guys use it to make beats?

i got it a month ago. does exactly what i need it to, and more. great stuff

Bumping this.

Well well well (heh) into Ableton at the mo. Latest 8.1.5 seems much more stable and more i use it the more fun i have with it.

However, just reinstalling after installed a new CPU Ram and Windows 7 so could go either way.

Mixing and MIDI still suck massively tho but for sheer fun its unbeatable.

Loving the drag tracks out of old projects feature, slick. And saving racks, clips etc in the library.

yup it is a nice way of making use of the zillions of unfinished tracks I have.

Do you know about setting up a default template for slicing to a drum rack?

taken from the ableton forum..

Create an empty Drum Rack
ˆ Add an empty Simpler or Sampler to the Drum Rack to create a single chain
ˆ Add any additional MIDI or Audio Effects to this chain
ˆ Adjust parameters in any of the devices
ˆ Assign Macro Controls to any of the controls in the chain’s devices OR DONT
ˆ Drag the entire Drum Rack to the Library/Defaults/Slicing folder
You can create multiple slicing presets and choose between them in the Slicing Preset chooser in the slicing dialog.

(bit slow moving, but a video showing the above http://soundsandgear.com/use-ableton-liv...ke-an-mpc/)

got nowhere near that depth tbh ... nice one. looks well handy.

Been mainly doing techno/acid in it. Perfect grooveboxes.

Its all these little touches im so impressed with. cubsae seems so cumbersome these days. Although i did have fun in cubase the other day, knowing it backwards helps. Do find afew things really restricting in Abelton, midi wise mainly. couldnt find a way to double/half time a midi clip - can you do this? pretty basic stuff Grumble ie play at half or double tempo.

Nice info Ashtonron Xyxthumbs Will have a dabble when I get home...

Just a quick one, is there a way of simply re-pitching all the slices in a drum rack, as opposed to individually? Bit of a chore when there's 40 odd slices Grin

Nice one again, Ableton is leaving Logic in the dust for me' these days, the interface is just ridiculously creative and adaptable

You could create a default rack with a macro mapped to the pitch

thanks you two Xyxthumbs

Messing about has just resulted in an horrifically underproduced lo-fi bastard of a tune that somehow sounds better than most of the polite shit i've been 'templating' recently

I tried it out last night, got a similar result Lol

Cool Grin

ps for logic users/ex-users.... how good is this??! EXS program import via drag and drop Icon_eek

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gp-ivPpVFvo - and it actually works as just tried it out! Multiple sample drum programs, synths, the lot. All you have to do is manually find the first corresponding wav file Yes That means it's now quite easy to import a good portion of your unfinished logic tracks into ableton, as you can simply import VST/AU midi track info (ie, notes), then just load up the synth you used originally, along with whatever fx etc, and also the exs channels will work too Lovesmilie

This program is nuts!

Really keen to start using these, just need to find the time to invest and stop starting tunes in other DAWs.

Question : do any of the built in devices/plugs have the ability to input or output CV? Or does it work in some other way in Live? I'm coming from a Reason background of being able to cable up CV outputs and inputs to mess around good and proper.

Do you guys use the warp function thats in there on breaks before chopping? Haven tried it out yet, just wondering....

nope..

a few devices have sidechain input, and the routing of audio is pretty flexible but nothing like the reason stuff.., you can do lots of parameter automation using 'dummy clips' and follow actions to emulate lfos etc... but I think this is something that they are going to work on in the next releases...

(in theory you could do some of that type of stuff if you delve into Max 4 live, which is a place of infinite possibilities, but I havent got the interest or time to go there..)

A lot of people rewire reason into live.. you can set up 'external instruments' which are actually instruments in reason.

nope, but I read on the ableton forum about somebody that wanted to do something similar... bulk warping of lots of samples

"how to convert 50 140 bpm loops in 130 bpm loops in LIVE ?"

http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=129224

could be a technique worth trying out...
(you could change the default warping type to suit the material you are using as well)

Thanks for that mate, thought as much. The MIDI to Reason looks interesting but I've always found Rewiring to confuse workflow a bit much but at least this would keep all the sequencing within Live.

I've been using ableton recently and its been a blast. So easy to chop shit up and ram it out all quick. So far, its my favorite interface I've come across. Although, I'm sick of dealing with crashing cracks and re registering the demo... I think I'm going to just suck it up and buy it. Although, anyone know what or when they're planning to release Ableton 9? I guess either way its pointless to wait bc once I buy it I can upgrade if I want. Grin
