The only artist I know that does that is Alpha Omega, are there any other artists that do it as well? I was also wondering whether it actually works out for them financially? I imagine that you would have to have a pretty big fan base.
Artists that sell their own CDR's?

I can tell you from running a label (albeit very early days) and from chatting to other label owners and producers, it's probably more cost effective to sell yourself. However there's all the kudos of being signed and a label releasing - especially so if the label is established as it's a marketing tool in it's own right. Selling your own music never gets you that credit, being released on, say, Subtle Audio or Sci Wax (I suggest them as being the labels of choice in the SC world ), holds a lot more in terms of artist progression and getting more recognised.
Certainly one day I'd love to see my label as an outlet for producers to gain more exposure and respect. A long way off right now.
Omar - S, the Detroit Techno producer sells his own CD-R's.
think it's usually mixes but think I might have seen some that were of tunes too.
id much rather a cdr in the post than mp3 any day!
fekin hate mp3's! SHIFT Wrote:id much rather a cdr in the post than mp3 any day! Damn right! I have purchased mp3's but only as a last resort, I would much prefer a cdr, even if it has no artwork or anything on it. Personally I think it would be great if more artists did this as I am so hungry for some really good music which some record/digital labels might be too scared to release. There might be some artists out there that have a lot of music which labels have not picked up on, it would be great if they could release to people - preferably CD - and they got nothing to lose, and at least the music will spread far and wide. Reason why I asked this in the first place is because of the CDR's Alpha Omega did and they are brilliant, and I am sure that some labels would not have picked up on it. But at the same time, the artist should get some sort of profit out of it too. I would be willing to pay for cdr's from certain artists.

If you're talking about dnb I have no idea, but outside of dnb there's tons of people releasing on cdr, both through labels and self-released. In most cases not a very profitable operation, often just small editions.

It's also been the case for most people who are not driven by profit. Just go to http://www.volcanictongue.com and type CD-R in the search engine and you'll get lots of examples. Seems to me that a lot of dnb wannabe artists are too obsessed with getting that piece of wax released and gaining "cudos" from that (a complete delusion of grandeur by the way), rather than actually getting the music out there.
