Headphones for mixing (again)

27 Replies, 8920 Views

Morning chaps.
I'm looking to save for some new mixing headphones...
got my sights set on some Senn' HD600's.. thing is everywhere I look online they are frighteningly expensive.. any recommendations for more reasonable prices offline?

Almost tempted by ebay, but Im nervous about cable wear issues on used examples..
My old Senn HD25SPII's fell apart so I dont have amazing hopes for senn's build quality..

Also - do I need a headphone amp to drive the 600's? My interface has some pretty decent gain on it and it drove my 250ohm 770's just fine..

(I previously had some Beyer 770Pro's but I found them too bass heavy and my mixes were coming out bass light) Icon_sad

Thanks in advance.
Hi mate

There is a thread on here somewhere started by Macc (i think) about the HD600's and headphone amps.
Will try and find it for youSmile

any upto date recommendations for sensible (sub £200) HD600 pricing are welcomed Smile
i gotta say, i love my hd595s, you should check 'em out! they're half the price of the 600s, and also lower impedance, so amplification's not as crucial.
what are they like for mixing on? (production- not dj mixing Wink )
they're the most neutral pair of headphones i've ever used! very comfortable to use for long periods of time as well. remind me of my mackie 824s in that i kind of forget that there's a device reproducing the sound, and just focus on the sound. haven't used the 600s myself but the comparisons i've read say the 600 sounds "a few rows back" while the 595 sounds "front row".
I still love Beyer 770. Wish I had 990.
Beyer DT770 for an excellent pair of headphones for producing on and can be picked up for around £120.

I've got a £40 pair of Audio Technica's. They aren't that great at all but I've learnt them and their sound so can easily produce using them. It's all about learning the sound of whatever pair you get.
True.

You can get used to any sound, but it is always better to hear everything (well, most of the output).
Saves your ears and time on taking it elswhere to listen.

Come on, it is not that hard to save some money by refusing from beer for few weeks, you know it.
You get what you want and a little health boost [Image: icon234.gif]
also look out for the 650s, they are sometimes cheaper than the 600s.

I got some for that reason, very nice indeed, very similar to me mackies...

Got DT770 Pro. Thoroughly pleased with them Smile

I realise of course the guy that recommended me them is not perhaps the best liked around SC these days but fair due to Marky for pointing me at them.
like i say- i couldnt get on with the 770's as if they sounded bang on in the cans, the mixes would be bass light on the monitors.
if the mix is bang on on the monitors; when listening through the cans the bass was overpowering...
This is a great article from last year.

Ta. 2005-2011: HD25-1, 70 ohm impedance is my model. Prior £20 Behringer. Live mixing predominantly. Learnt strengths/deficiencies, don't plan upgrade in near future. Will give it a read though. Xyxthumbs

Don't you find them hideously uncomfy for more than about 3 seconds? The sound is spot on and I'd not use anything else for DJing (same pair since 97 says it all) but for mixing / producing the sound, while spot on, is too intense and comfort is non-existant.
how about technics rp-dj1200? great mixing phones

Cap fits: "Specifications are all well and good, but the acid test of any monitoring system is how easy it is to use, and how good the results," / "The good isolation makes them suitable for laptop editing/arranging/composition on the move." / "amongst the most sensitive in the group, and the sound spectrum was very well balanced, with accurate deep bass, a clear, open mid-range and top-end, accurate dynamics and clean, high SPLs."

I read + 1/2 reviews, and the ATH M50 transcribes well. Keepsake: rarely produce tracks, and only for short periods.
AKG k702 for me. You can find good deals for them. I got mine for 270 usd. Tbh though I use my vintage k240s more often.
see thats the thing.. I produce for HOURS at a time Grin
The 770's were wonderful for comfort..

my record is 11 hours straight before my ears gave/the wife threw a book at me to get off the PC and come to bed!! Icon_razzIcon_razz

I have a loaned pair of 600's to borrow tonight totest during some late night production..
Thought so. Thing is I'm doing that now, but I don't keep using just headphones for that length of time. I'd prefer comparing on speakers of whatever quality and taking regular breaks. However I'm sure you do that too to some extent.

By the way, seeing as it's your thread(s), and it's production based, apologies if my post in that Funktion One thread came across as an attack. Head hasn't been right for quite a while, so even if the sentiments were correct, I sometimes end up interpreting several meanings from everything, and as I'm rarely outspoken it doesn't always translate clearly. Have to clear the air, since I can dwell on things for years. And occasionally I'll impression exactly the opposite of what I intended to.

Wasn't the case there, but you get my drift. Smile Wave

Hi Impact, If you mean Sehnheizer ( meaning your old headphones) .. I had my sehnheizers for 6 years until they wore and I replaced for $50. Had to do it a few times after too due to other issues that were my fault ..( sticking them in airplane jack.. Dont ever do that people, its a trap!!!) Good company though, will give you brand new ones for 50, no matter what model or problem you have with them! Smile ( I could stand corrected but that has been my experience with the company...)
Hope that helps. Not too sure though sounds like your looking for different ones possibly?

I had the HD 280s which are a lot cheaper these days than when they were when i bought them but i wouldnt even consider producing beats on them now. Not that they dont sound nice i just dont think they are accurate, by seeing the difference to my monitors (which prob arent accurate either). I am very interested in peoples suggestions for accurate headphones available in that price range you are looking for, if they exist out there. ( definitely want some myself.)

So you thought the 770s didnt have enough low end? Is that it though?

No. The 770' have way too much bass for my ears.

Ez muttley.
I do most of my mixing in cans, then double checking on monitors, then master it up on the monitors. I just tend to be an intense/obsessive compulsive producer when its flowing ... Wink

Not a problem about the F1 thread. Smile
