Speed/Pitch when Processing a Break

Hi All,

Long time lurker, first time poster!

I've been hunting though old posts on Break Processing and had a question I haven't seen anwsered (If it has sorry for missing it; feel free to slag me then send me the link to the thread)

Let say I want to use a Break at it's original Pitch, but at 170-175 BPM.
When I do my inital processing is it better to EQ, Compress at original pitch and speed first.. then chop or Chop get to desired speed/pitch and then EQ/Compress/etc/etc

i like to do my processing after ive changed the tempo but some breaks that are quite dirty i like to process, then sample in my sampler then change the tempo, it all really depends on the sound your going for i think. just experiment to find the workflow you like best. i guess there is no right or wrong with how you do it
Along with that ^ You'll want to watch out for digital artifacts from stretching/compressing the break to fit the tempo without changing the pitch. If it's already close to the tempo you prefer it should be OK, but if not then you'll probably want to pitch it some...

There seem to be endless ways people approach chopping, so just find what works for you.
Cool thanks for the thoughts.. I like to see what other people are doing as it can give fresh ideas to my own workflow.

Yea I originally started just pitching up breaks but I never timestretch my breaks.
Now I always chop by hand in Reaper and load each hit into one of my hardware samplers then use a nice function in Reaper to steal the midi piano-roll groove from the hits and then can change bpm regardless of pitch (using an amp env to control the length of each hit)

I like the idea of doing a bit of processing before chopping just for cleaning up the break's overall sound then chop, get to tempo and desired pitch and re-process... guess it all depends on the break Drums

thats a interesting way of chopping, might have to try it sometime thanks. my real problem is artifacts left in the breaks from timestretching.
I got a super fast amen going last night by timestretching it to 200bpm then pitching it down to 166 then boosting the gains on the emu about 9db (it also normalises the sample after boosting the gains, sounds killer on sub bass)
good stuff, chopping breaks is the best part of it all.
what other effects do yall use on breaks for little edits and that?

This!

Personally I manually chop in the audio editor and split to different tracks if I want to allow room for tails. I manually adjust attach & release by fading the wave form. No time streching unless there is no other option.

Interesting!

I do something really similar.
Cubase lets you take the "groove" too, so I chop, take the groove, and load the samples in my sampler. I make a multi program for my sampler with drum hits, set to loop from forward to reverse, and make MIDI notes bend together. All MIDI notes in the Multi are set to same group mute i.e. each note mutes all other notes in group. Each hit has it's own program (I was thinking a program for each part of the drum kit would have been a better idea) and I change pitch, filter, LFO, modulation, etc. at the Multi level.

for non-CC control stuff I have to use a device panel in Cubase. REAPER let's you control the ADSR envelope on a hardware sampler? Now I'm curious.

What's this function called?

I've been meaning to start a thread about stuff like this - sorry to hijack. Oops

depends on your hardware sampler :teeth:

I haven't tried doing it on the S1000 (it's midi implementation is very basic) but on the EMU Ultra 5000 you can set midi CC cords to control most of the parameters inside the unit.
Reaper comes with a VST I can stick on a channel and automate any Midi CC I want (ReaMidiControl); I think you can download the VSTs for free from KVR and use in any DAW supporting VST.
The last tune my buddy and I were working we did it all live from hardware; I was drawing in the filter, pitch and decay of the break from reaper directly into the EMU for the breaks (EQ was done through one of my Ashly units)

For the groove there is an extension you need to install ( included in SWS extensions), but you can grab a set of items (midi notes or Audio bits) and extract the groove and re-apply (it also comes with some basic swing grooves from MPC and SP1200 units)
Out of the box you can get a "recycle" like midi for chopped drum hits too; you just have to make sure you set the project bpm to the same as the loop.
The exact function is "Create chromatic midi from items" which needs to be mapped to a key-shortcut after you first install.

I'm a bit of a Reaper fan boy though Bow but I was able to convert my buddy who uses Reason and Logic to switch

Can't quote ATM but I suppoae you're right about the sampler. The S5/6 k has a 50 page manual for Sysex, so I assume the device panel is needed.

On second thought, I'm going to wqit and follow up when I get home in an hour on 2.

When I got my s2000 in the 90's the manual did my head in!

I really, really, really enjoy when I unknowingly switch to or from multi mode.
i still can't believe there's only 1 external controller not inc. pitchbend, aftertouch, mod wheel.
