The Dastardly Diaries Chapter 4 - The Blues Cause - Now available!

26 Replies, 12270 Views

A stripped down, Mp3 player friendly, digestible-in-one-sitting read from Muttley, aka Foci's Left (producer), aka Mick Robert Buckingham.

Within The Dastardly Diaries Chapter 4 lies a tackling of "the blues cause" as an overarching theme, and music of this quality to soothe.

Inside you're getting:

TDD Chapter 4 ClipZIP - four full length, high quality tracks from post-rockers Audiocaeneat!, (Jungle) experimentalist GlassBox, and enuui (Ambient). Plus 11 more specially chosen audio clips from the likes of Code, Paradox, Atoms For Peace (Thom Yorke's new project) and Boduf Songs. That's 15 new sounds in all!

Through The Looking Glass (TL), Lughole Lubricants (LL) and Mind's Ear (ME) provide sections for discussion on how music heals the blues, with retrospective selections of great amounts of great content. Meta language - where things seem to be wrong - remains a strong feature of decompiling the fusions present.

Lawrence English's excellent "A Young Person's Guide To Hustling In Music And The Arts" rounds out the scripted package with choice insights on how you can play ball musically.

Finally, along with a selection of fine images, Muttley has contributed a 3 deck Jungle / Drum & Bass mix called "Transients" to the ZIP archive.

that's what you have to do – it's a link to an download site (sendspace) not a direct link to the files

That's right. Until I get a new host name from Kapsil, the files are uploaded to sendspace. Everything is downloadable normally, you just have to click 'Download from sendspace'. Grin

Hope you enjoy! Feedback greatly appreciated and thoroughly welcome. There was a lot of wagering whether I should write more or just leave it be, which I did in the end, and I think it's more poignant this way. I feel it gives equal credence to the music and recognises that as a primary motor drive for the analysis side.

I'll be drawing out content from the zine in this thread, so please feel free to link anyone in that you like.

Oops Well that's a compliment if I ever heard one! I know who you are. Zero productions of mine in here this time - besides production of the audio clip sequence and mixtape - but you can find freely downloadable productions of mine with a search of "Foci's" on Subvert Central.

The cause of "the blues" in society, as I see it, is driven by the recession construct. Within the recession construct lies 'progression', 'regression', and 'digression' subs. They are not impartial - they simply work as meta-extensions of universality, for everything, all around the world. Within progression, for instance, lies the ability to regress or digress. This works as a basis for all three movements, an up, down, middle - a left, right, centre, too.

Depression is the root cause of my wish to construct TDD Chapter 4. It is a fundamental countered overlay to my projects, and writings, of the past 30 months. But also a corollary into questioning what really gets me down.

I have found the following quantifying the lows:

- Anxiety from the tempo that runs at 120-140bpm, or "the bass music genetic explosion"
- Excess 'noise' in tracks, i.e what can't be filtered out in the regular timespan of "currents"
- Fidgety movements, or displacement of emotion for aggression's sake

Perhaps this is just my natural temperament - you could say "impassive listener." But this view is likewise only half the story. Generally I can't deal with too much noise in my daily experiments in life. Incidentally, it seems neither can the majority of listeners over 25. I'm that age now. So, I focus on Ambient and electro-acoustic music. Is this down to neurological rebalancing as the mind ages? Let's look at this closer...

Your just mellowing out man. Happens. It's like mid-twenties puberty.

Just don't ever forget how awesome breakcore can be after too much coffee.
Normally I'd agree with you Ian, only there's been some extrinsic and explicit reasons for me getting more agitated by music these last five years. Normally music soundtracks my working week 8-4, but that hasn't been so with being out of work due to illness. I've gradually been recovering from psychosis, schizo-affective disorder and bipolar disorder, so much so that there's been three years between the release of this and TDD Chapter 3. I wanted to bring the influences full circle in a positive manner and feedback so far is indicative of much greater things. Scraping away all the residue of the heavy heart archetype and getting better at softening the blow.

Lest I forget what breakcore and coffee do to me though. :P Smile
Neurological Rebalancing

The first research I conducted online with the term "neurological rebalancing" actually led me to a hotlink on drug rehabiliation. Step 9 on this (http://nrcissi.org/5-steps-for-finding-a...ou-part-2/) list summarised it: "After care is a huge thing when it comes to the success of your sobriety. " it notes. Read in disconnect, this might not have a lot of impact, but this is crucial, exemplary advice, in the form of a reality check.

It points to these three factors:

- Stimulants, and why they're not good for you all the time
- Over-stressing oneself, and why it's good to let the hair down from time to time
- Process of the divergences partakable in life in general, and how drugs affect standpoint
So up until now we've looked at 'progression' and 'regression' in some basic meta detail. Now the 'digression' part: this enveloping of the term "drug" I find an important encircler of "the blues" cause in society. As music is the drug of choice for many, as well as for me, and that's what I want to focus on properly now.

TDD Chapter 4 - The Anti-Depressive 10 - Shortlist

Along with Lawrence English's excellent "A Young Person's Guide To Hustling In The Arts" (included in the TDD Chapter 4 ZIP), I've assembled a raft of quotations that help me to analyse why and how I'm feeling down, what I do to change it, and how to, fundamentally, sort wheat experiences from chaff experiences. This mindset is paired with tracks and discussion both in and out of context, to transcend the habitual thinking arrangements we have normatively.

1. Ekca Liena - Landing / Paul Jebanasam - Music For St. John The Baptist (Downer Supine EP, Entropy / Sublive 001 - Muttley - 15 MOF Pt. 52 - Hurt - December 2011)

"But entropy also appears in communication theory, where it represents a numerical measure of the uncertainty of an outcome. Is this Wright’s proposal, that a landscape, as representation, is a measure not of a represented place, but of the ambiguity and indeterminacy of representation itself? And that this measure can be heard?" ~ Nathan Thomas, Fluid Radio

http://www.fluid-radio.co.uk/2012/11/mar...listening/

Also, can it be felt? The distribution of literal weight to apochryphal dirge induction comes through the overwhelming phases of entropy itself as a component - from taking in too much information - and having nowhere to reprocess it towards. This belies the depression many news outlets underground face when looking for their spiel and spin on the week's events. In the case of "Hurt", my 52nd 15 Minutes Of Fame mix, though, I had to get out the negative emotions in a healing manner. A befitting dirge for the senses to counsel - and this bipolarity makes up the variety of ups and downs in the TDD 4 sound collage.
02. Rick Hanson - Meditations For Happiness (Sounds True download, Part 1)

"Drop it. That is completely wrong. You hurt yourself..." Rick Hanson, Meditations For Happiness

In respect to placing preliminary fenders on the idea you will be hurt or that an objective is not worth your time. Rick Hanson explains that it's not healthy to live in a state of predicted underachievement. Where musicians and writers are concerned, they can underwhelm themselves negatively for the next time they record their thoughts. For label owners, they may pack up shop altogether if they don't see sales coming in a rose-tinted glasses mindset they once had, or may adopt as industry procedure of the "it's all good" attitude disbelief.

03. Duotone - Alphabet (Ropes CD, Track 3)

"Alphabet of words, spins like a rainbow, from my head" ~ Barney Morse-Brown

How producers and musicians hit it off in a personal way and environment afterward plays a crucial role from what words are used, as TDD Chapter 2 was keen to meta-link. For instance, if the winning streak seems to lie in material gain, can that materiality ever really be justified over doing things for the love? Duotone have never been about material success, yet their sound is rich with life's experience that it seems criminal not to include a track off their newest album.

04. Boduf Songs - Maggot Ending (Burnt Up On Re-Entry LP, 2013)

"Now the day, is run / And the love, that welds in your eye, it glistens there / With everything you've seen." ~ Mat Sweet

A reflection can change your life forever. An instating of a trail, picking pieces of the past and putting them together in new formulations. This can work to happiness' advantage when focusing on positive experiences. And the key word is experiences, not actions. Actions can lead to failure in some minor form - failure is only ever a minor event - whereas the resting of intention on your intention brings about all the changes you intend.

05. Pilote feat. Lewis - Welcome (Kingfood LP, Certificate 18, 2003)

"Jabbing at your jaw so for here and ever more" ~ Lewis

"I have been conscious of beauty as far back as I can remember. In childhood I quickly discovered the beauty of nature in a garden - in the flowers, the trees, and the shrubs. After this I became aware of the beauty of the seasons - snow in winter, crocuses and daffodils in springtime, the sun, sea and sky in summer, and the rich hues of autumn. Travel opened up fresh vistas of beauty, especially in the mountains of the Himalayas, Africa and the Alps. Dawn and dusk are also constant reminders of the beauty of the world. For many people today, beauty is seen as something outside us, not only in nature, but in music, poetry and art, and in the beauty of another person. However, we seem to have lost the awareness of beauty present in the depths of our being, and rarely do we become the beauty we feel and long for." ~ William Sykes, The Eternal Vision, p27. This quote should be read as a dialectic assuage to the Pilote track.
