firefinga's DnB/Jungle Reviews 2015 01

19 Replies, 8040 Views

I am starting a monthly series of reviews of DnB/Jungle releases. The thread/Forum structure is helpful in that regard since I will be able to add new posts regarding newly reviewed releases that caught my attention a bit later and so on.

I'll start with two releases from Metalheadz:

*)Artificial Intelligence "Forgotten Truths"

http://www.discogs.com/Artificial-Intell...se/6542886

The musical style of this double EP is very much "liquid". Artificial Intelligence are doing their thing for over a decade now, if I was still DJing I'd consider buying this one only as filler material. Tracks are well produced and all, the main title even has pop appeal as in potential chart success, but there's nothing special here.

*)Mikal with Nymfo and Riot "Where They At"

http://www.discogs.com/Mikal-Nymfo-2-Rio...se/6553867

This three tracker sounding way more interesting for my ears, being on the darker sounding side of things. Generally, follwoing the slower DnB/Jungle route of late I might buy this.

My fav track (teaser) of this EP here:

And on the Metalheads sublabel a januar release by Beta 2 & Zero Tolerance "Election"

http://www.discogs.com/Beta-2-Zero-T-Ele...se/6571036

A three track EP which kinda disappointed me at the first listen, but is a bit of a grower. Musically, it's actually not that impressive either. Simple 2 step patterns, yet some uplifting sounds thrown into the mix. Again, If I was still DJing, I'd consider buying it as another filler.

My fav track of this EP is Beta 2's "The Edge". It's just a simple party tune.

Next one is from Digital on the small but very enthusiastic Dutch label Tempo Records.

Digital "Africa" 3 Track EP:

http://www.discogs.com/Digital-Africa/release/6335269

Tempo is a fairly new label now having reached cat number 10 whith this release. Earlier in 2014 the label released tracks by the legendary Voyager or longtime SC member/Contributor DJ Trax.

First track "Logged In" is a straight forward amen tune, the other two "Africa" and "Fire" steer pretty much into the direction of Digital's Dubby style of DnB, but all in all, don't really go to the extremes of his sound. A decent 3-Tracker, but nothing to get too excited about either.

Enjoyed all the shorthand audio so far, thanks
Next two releases are from Seba's Secret Operarions imprint. First one is the two tracker by Seba and Paradox "Delusions/Future Now".

Already a whole thread got devoted to this release on SC, see here:

Official Discogs: http://www.discogs.com/Seba-Paradox-Delu...ter/784026

Delusions is a very minimalistic workout, a decent listening at homeaffair.

The track for me of this EP however is "Future Now". Pretty energetic drums, aiming clearly more on the floor (which to me is never wrong), immaculate production. A very likely buy here.

Also out now on Secret Operations: Seba's very own 2 Tracker "Inside Yourself / Berberian Sound"

http://www.discogs.com/Seba-Inside-Yours...ter/788565

now here we have a very minimal approach, almost electro in it's sound aesthetics. Interesting in it's own right I think, something for the home listening crowd I'd suggest.

Inneractive 040 : Spirit "Dial VIP/Cobra":

http://www.discogs.com/Spirit-VIP-Dial-C...se/6561268
http://inneractivemusic.bandcamp.com/alb...dial-cobra

"Dial" has been released several times already in different versions, this one being a not very interesting fast dancefloor thing. Way better is "Cobra", a dubby groover more on the slower side of things.

The vinyl however is already sold out Icon_sad - I'd buy it for "Cobra".

This one I noticed via a blog I occasionally check.

A nice two tracker by DJ Jedi on his Jedi Records imprint.

Here is a clip from the A side "Earthbound" - nice darkness track

Klute keeps pn keepin' on too and releases a decent 3 tracker, bearing the title "You Won't Like It" - well, I do actually and of the three tracks my fav is "Rays" - I like the (semi)-Heavy drums in that combined with the warm strings.

I've always had a tendency towards heavy n dark dancefloor oriented tunes and lately DJ Trace's DSC14 is delivering the goods again. In January a new series of their "Spy Technology" Albums got a release.

Alongside comes a 12 Inch sampler EP with a track by Tango and Lighterman. It appears that this is THE Tango from back in the days who had plenty of smashers on Formation between 92 and 96.

But actually, all that I heard from this album is great.

Also good, on Soul:r - a 2 Tracker by DRS

Despite the official release date being 22th of February Euphony informed us here in early January of this release already:

Excellent laid back-ish elegant Jungle on Omni Music's "Outer Reach EPs 1 and 2.

Excellent, the Outer Reach EPs will claim the top spots in my soon-to-be-published top tens of this months as well! Reason: they are top notch!

This came on after The Other Side Of The Tracks Amen-Talist special, and was surprisingly amazingly refreshing for a mainstream dnb podcast - Hospital Records.
