POLITICS Charlottesville protests statues & slavery

Can't believe there isn't a thread on here about this already?

It took me a while to get to the bottom of what it was, only hearing reports of it here & there. So it comes down to Confederate statues in the south which many are wanting to see taken down over their connotations to slavery

Not sure what I think about the issue... as there is argument either side on it

The thing though is what seems to be in place in America is an antagonistic, belligerent and holier-than-thou 'left wing' that I don't think we really have over here, which has led to that social conservatism of the 'alt-right' that has built up... off the back of that, are riding the free market ideologues arguing for even freer deregulated markets (wtf?)
and then yes, the white nationalists 

Of course, images were shocking and were easy to have knee-jerk outrage at... So what does anyone else think?

The Confederate statues aren't really historic though, are they? Weren't most of them put during the civil rights era as a basically recist reaction?

I am neither an American nor in the US but I think they should keep those statues but add more info to it via additional signs/plates or qr codes that lead to informative websites and such. The US civil war wasn't solely about slavery either. Plus, I have difficulties with those views to declare people like Jefferson evil all of a sudden bc he owned slaves. That was common over 200 years ago, nobody wants to return to slavery for crying out loud.
