i like the lesser known french historians/philosophers of science bachelard and canguilhem (who taught and influenced foucault).

gaston bachelard...what is he all about?

not that i've done much on him, but bachelard talked about the 'epistemological shift' - a concept appropriated later by his students, explicitly by althusser and in a round-about way by foucault. they tended to use it as a diachronic concept i.e. a concept that allowed one to account how the world of the imaginary (and of course the real world too!) shifted in some way at a structural level over time - hence early foucault and his 'epistemes'.

actually though, as i understand it, bachelard meant it to be used to account for the (radical) difference between the way we normally relate to the ordinary world and the way scientific method allows us to concieve of the world and explore it - allowing us to reformulate reality as we go along.

that's what i can half remember, apologies if it isn't quite accurate - he isn't taught in british universities (even those with good history/philosophy of science departments).

only read the banks one of those Oops

egan is good, naturally informed by cyberpunk but with larger questions about personal identity and other weighty matters in the background - i'd recommend permutation city and diaspora (both gollancz) for starters.

i've read so much about piercy and haven't had time...and i've heard tonnes of good things about that particular book.

Sad2
i just finished coetzee's "age of iron"...and since i'm keeping myself (in the absense of school) on a rigorous fiction/non-fiction schedule, my next book is going to be jean baudrillard's "screened out".

unless it starts to bore me to tears.

currently "the fall of advertising & the rise of pr" and "guerilla publicity" as i'm trying to learn some marketing basics.

before that "clubland," an account by a village voice journalist of the rise & fall of peter gatien, michael caruso, michael alig and chris paciello of limelight nyc... hella scandalous stuff, makes clubbers and promoters today look like old ladies.

before that "buffet: making of an american capitalist" which was surprisingly enjoyable but still has me stressed about money.

taking many notes from this thread for what to borrow next...! Chin
...still consulting "art of war"

3. planning a siege

"the general rule for use of the military is that it is better to keep a nation intact than to destroy it, better to keep an army intact than to destroy it...

...therefore, those who win every battle are not really skillful- those who render other's armies helpless without fighting are the most skillful of all."

"the lowest is to attack a city. Siege of a city is only done as a last resort."

....and it makes me mad, because things i read in the news every day are only the clearest reminder that the military in this country (US)act like they have never even heard of this book.

Oh thank god I saw the yea right, I was worried for a second you were actually wasting moments of your life on the Celestine Prophecy.

Currently for me is, My First Movie by Stephen Lowenstein which features in-depth interviews with directors discussing their first films & everything that went along getting started in the industry.

So inspiring, I think anyone as an artist needs to have it drilled into them that they shouldn't be so afraid of rejection & failure & not being perfect & not having things come out the exact way they wanted. It's common sense, I know, but I lose track of that way too often.
