Alpha Omega - Swingers
AO kicks the Subvert Central label off in fine style with two devastating slices of beat ridden mayhem. Swingers' use of proper analogue keys and LFO fx gives it a distinctively electro sound while the beats slice their way through the mix in an industrial stepping fashion. More acidic synth lines chop and change as the tune keeps providing rough and smooth counterpoints to the tectonic bass movements below. I can't work out for the life of me how these drums were processed, but clearly there's some clever programming going on while keeping the head nodding groove throughout. Some really pleasing old skool pads hit home towards the end with a good vocal sample rounding proceedings off. Classy and innovative without going over the top on any level.

Alpha Omega - Militant Thoughts
Militant Thoughts centres around a simple riff which builds over the course of the track, gradually becoming more intense as other frantic synth lines are added. The drum work is pretty crazy at points as well as incorporating tempo shifts and other fills which will push your dancing skills to their absolute limit. One for the rhythmically devious deviants amongst you for sure. This track gets pretty intense towards the middle before dropping down into some spine tingling hands in the air melodies with bubbling hi hats. Definitely time for your jaw to hit the floor before building back up through the main riff which is lent an extra wobble and moving off along its way. Totally heavy raving action for the headz.

Blue - Suck
Blue punks it up with some drum strewn carnage on the second SC release. The kicks and snares hammer the point home through kaleidoscopically tweaked breaks as further sonic fury adds to the mix. A sub driven squelch keeps things funky with another rhythmic layer grooves along the underbelly bulking things out. This gives the track an extra paunch to the already obese framework as the rest of the track is littered with visceral feedback. The bassline is labyrinthine with many twists and turns evolving relentlessly. All in all a techstepping monster with angry drums.

Blue - Nextploitations
The drums in this one have a nice live sound to them although the break used is as tight as you like. A film noir atmosphere pervades much of the track through mellowtron sounds and buzzing indian chords. The beats jump around like a three-legged funk monster as some tense chords keep your expectations high. Quality horns swirl around the subs and archaic chords complete the smokey jazz tinged picture.

Blue - My Mind Is Going
A bit of a downbeat number, this reminds me of rainy Sunday afternoons with its sultry chords and brass. The breaks roll along in a suitably lazy fashion with piano flourishes to accentuate the groove. Squealing trumpets add some extra sparkle and provide light through the sepia gloom. Definitely one for the horizontal amongst you as the track reaches its chopped beat conclusion. In a word, nice.

Pieter K - Crossroads
Pieter K rolls out an eerie drum track packed with funky attack. Some jazzy chords keep the mood sepia and odd vocal samples lounge it up in the foggy background. The drums never stop evolving as a funked up acoustic bass guitar steadies the groove. Subs and a drawn out squelch become the focal point of the track before being joined by a low sax. A really spacious sounding tune with jazzed smokey vibes. In a word, nice.

Pieter K - Maze
The rolls in this tune are just too darn crisp overlaid with bluesy mournful horns. Filters snake through each drum in turn as the rhythm bangs out its intent with an insistent snare. The bass keeps itself subtly hidden but is nonetheless heavy enough to sway the behinds of all on the dancefloor. As the breaks get more chaotic hissing synths mist over the rest of the mix. A good counterpoint to the incisive beatwork and another worthy addition to the Subvert Central label.
