Building a studio...

20 Replies, 10372 Views

So...i'd like to fancy myself as someone who knows a fair amount about studio equipment...but bein the broke ass that i've been the last year, I've kinda fallen outta the loop. So here's the deal, this girly i know is goin into business for herself trynta be a producer for up n comin hip-hop artists and she wants me ta help build her studio. We're going to Guitar Center today and the cap is $20K Icon_eek

so...the question is, any of u audio geeks that are still in the loop, if u had 20k to drop on a studio, how would it be spent? I'd imagine a pro-tools rig is in order....what about monitors? Computers, software, mics, mixer, hardware? Any advice would be much appreciated ^__^
and keep in mind this is a studio to record and produce hip-hop, not dnb.

And not so much focused on the beat making aspect (although i will prolly be makin heaters over there) but moreso for recording and mastering albums...
thx for ur time and help <3

I think he's saying if you got enough for a pro-tools setup perhaps you should go elsewhere other than Guitar centre.

Please post in the studio forum, you'll get more reponse there. Cool

Damn, going to guitar center with $20K will waste a lot of money with taxes and such. I'd buy online...
you cant decide and buy a system on a whim - thats just silly.
I strongly suggest you do some research on-line before parting with your hard earned cash.

The first question to ask is what do you have the most experience in?

Cubase - (Need fast PC)
Logic - (Mac)
Pro-Tools - (Mac)

Which answers the question MAC or PC.

Also consdier the space you will be using, will you need accustic treatment? are you considering a mic booth (would be useful for hip-hip as you will be recording mcs)?

Ease back and spend wisely. Is the money going to self-destruct? Hahaha

Take your time man! The history of home studios is littered with people waling about 'that thing' they bought on a whim...

fyi, yawll....this is not myyy money Wink

goin with a hot spoiled little girly who thinks shes gonna be the next big hip hop producer who has hella money. it's her decision. im just gonna get a bj in the car on the ride over and basically gonna be able to have free access to a studio anytime i want ^__^ she dont know shit about fuck, so im just tryna help her out....

oooooooobviously if this was my money, i'd buy a lot of shit online and spend a healthy amount of time doin research. but why do u think 20k wouldnt go very far? u can definitely haggle with salemen at guitar center, i got better deals on my turntables and mixers there then i found online anywhere- hunting for weeeeks. basically i think we should put most of the money into a mic/pre amps/monitors...? Chin

i found a sweeeeeet site that sells do it yourself sound booths online for roughly around 4-500 bucks for the real nice ones ^__^

i only posted here, becuz i respect the time and research a lot of u nerds put into sound equipment buys Icon_razz hehe. so maybe i should change the subject...for recording rapping, whats a good mic/pre-amp that wouldnt consume the whole budget...maybe like 4-7k...? and is a pro-tools rig really 20k??? Icon_eek
do they have simpler rigs then the ones they use in million dollar studios?

i know i know... Google Roll hehe. id rather just git ur guyzs opinion on it though if u could stop bein such smot osses for a tick ^__^

come on, i know some of u are Homerdrool over things u just can't afford right now, so what are they? and do u think they would be useful to me? aaaaaaaaaand fin post. Acclaim

I was thinking about what pre you should get, and one of the best value for money pre's I have used is the TLA Ivory quad pre. About £500, and good for all manner of things, very colourful and full of balls. The you could compliment that with something like the FMR RNP, which I've heard good clean things about Smile

that sounds like a lot of fun Homerdrool

surely if she wants to be a producer she's going to want to be making beats though? (just curious)
i don't know if it can be done.. waiting to see if it's actually possible to build a studio for only twenty grand..
