was listening to some music earlier and all of a suuden my sound card starts flipping out making this horribly peircing crazy elictrical nasty fuckin sound for no apparent reason.
obviously i turned everything right down and restarted the computer, first time it gets as far as trying to load patch mix and fails (and seizes) so i switch the whole thing of for 5 mins and try again, this time everything loads ok... patchmix works, all indicator lights coming on as normal.
so i try to play a tune in media player... no sound! so i checked patchmix and you can see that there is audio going through the card (the cables and amp and speakers defo all work) as far as i can tell everything is setup as it should be in patchmix but it still dnt work, i've been trying for ages
so is it fucked or not... any suggestions would be hot
its an E-MU1820 btw
hi J, i'd maybe try first checking the settings within control panel/audio devices to see if anything's screwed up there - have you actually physically turned the card off, or is a pci one?
if you have and still aren't getting anything out, you could try moving the faders up and down within patchmix (i'm assuming that's the software mix-console prog for your card) - my m-audio fw410 needs me to quickly twiddle the fader down then up for me to get sound coming out EVERY time i power up my macbook after plugging it in, weird....! even though the levels are all bouncing up and down on the meters.
if this fails i'd prob try downloading the very latest drivers and just uninstalling/reinstalling again, even if they're the same version you might have a corrupt file somewhere that might be remedied by this?
have you installed any new hardware recently that could have brought this on?
just a few thoughts, sure i had this with my old MOTU at one point....
all the best, maff
cheers for that bud, i'll try the fader thing but i dont think it will b that tho
uninstalling and re-installing seems like a good idea tho
cool, let us know how you get on mate
ps can't seem to get any tracks playing on your virb page, the player just sits there doing nowt....wtf
will do m8
dunno why de virbs not workin, it usualy works fine
i have my mates at home his breakout box is fine but the card is fucked and emu won't help, they have offered a cheap 1616m but thats not a good answer really,
so i have 2 breakout boxes and 1 working card right now
Speaking of soundcards, my Delta 44 is driving me nuts at the moment. Constant popping and clicking during playback of audio and video files. Drivers are up to date, and i've adjusted the buffer settings to see if that makes a difference - nothing. Checked there are no IRQ conflicts - again, nothing. Not a huge amount of processes running, and whilst my pc isn't amazing, it can easily handle what i'm asking it to do: play a sodding mp3 file!
Any ideas guys? I'm slowly going mad and starting to dislike all my music
Oh btw, the soundcard is fine when playing vinyl through it - i.e decks > dj mixer > soundcard > pc.

yeh the connection between my box and the card is extremley tempramental sometimes, bit of a design flaw i think

i got this a few week back, have you had any other soundcard installed recently or used you mobo's onboard sound at all? that was the problem on mine
some driver cleaning software sorted it out and reinstalling the card

nope, no other soundcard has been installed, and the onboard card was disabled.
gonna do a fresh windows install this and start from scratch again. hopefully some method will sort the problem! what software were you using btw?
tyler Wrote:itunes for windows? screws your audio royally
i own an ipod, so having itunes on there makes life easy for me. the drivers it uses are seperate from windows resources aren't they?

sx3, or if you mean the driver cleaning stuff that was called driver cleaner pro or some shit like that, think i still have it saved on a disc somewhere gimme a shout and ill dig it out
was just a shot in the dark to be honest, it was driver related for me (particularly old unused drivers) and i was getting hissing and popping, but it doesnt sound like the same thing unfortunatley
Reinstalled Windaz this evening... it seems to have worked.
AT FUCKING LAST! < emotionally drained & happy.
I blame iTunes.

I spoke to soon
Turned my pc on earlier and the popping/clicking started. It can't be iTunes as that hasn't been installed this time round.
There are no IRQ conflicts, and i'm bang up to date on drivers for all hardware. Very odd how it was fine last night - 2 or so hours of music playing - but repeating what it's been doing for months, this morning.
Does anyone know of a tried & tested audio guide I can follow to turn various services off? Some of you are fairly clued up with slipstreaming xp, so what do you tend to do after a new install? Before you have the pleasure of fixing the cunting thing several months down the line
I'll dig the document out and send it over as soon as I can

first after a fresh install: ghost
make an image of your current settings when everything is working properly, so next time things fuck up you can replace all in less than 10 minutes

Thank you Nigel

Some very good advice indeed.
Any particular software I should be using?
Acronis True Image I think is highly rated.
i use that, its very good and simple cheap too
I have a copy of that right here on my desk
Never thought of creating myself an image for home use, funny that.
Thank you gents.
