Yes, and if I ever heard that kind of thing in dnb I might agree... unfortunately I don't ...!

personally whenever I notice a jazz musician quoting live I just think "dickhead "

A good bassline is a good bassline, but if you don't shape it yourself, it's somebody else's good bassline. Fair do's to whoever might do it, but personally that's something I don't like.
@ Statto - really?

But is it important whose bassline it is? Personally I wouldn't use somebody else's bassline as a loop in one of my own tracks, but when listening to music I don't really care about that, as long as what I hear has any artistic merit as a whole.
Plunderphonics
and often i'm the same - it's not as if i think about this too much when i'm just listening to stuff although, if the sample is that blatant then i can't help but notice it.
it's very very important to me when i'm making music though. i spose i just hate that feeling knowing that the best part of my track is written and performed by someone else with no assistance/guidance from me - the supposed musician/artist! i find it strange some artists don't care about that ('itz juss fat loops innit hguy'), but then, i'm probably up my own arse. :d
the bad thing about this thread is that searching through a shitload of jimi hendrix for some breaks last night, i felt so dirty

I plan to sample old dnb records for non-dnb purposes, let's see how that works.
no need for teef - give it a go!

I'll sample some Goldie (I hope he throws a hissy fit), and there's no :goldteef:

Im an MC ................do you think im a total biter when i say ''Relax your minds and let your consience be free, ya now rollin with the boys from the L-A-B'' ............clearly ive taken this from EPMD(and changed for me) !!!???!!!???

As we've very vaguely agreed on (did we? I'm lost ), it's not a matter of whether the person listening knows/cares about the source, most people don't.
The question is are you okay with it? Do you feel anything when you think you've 'appropriated' a lyric when you could likely have come up with something equally good yourself without too much trouble?

statto : why? what makes you feel that way about it? does it lose some mystique or something?
i mean, quoting is usually more present in stuff like straight ahead.....where guys are playing on tunes that they've played a million times before. it's kind of like a gag.....some people catch it, others don't.
charlie parker quoted shit like craaaazy son! then again, bebop is very fun music so i think it fits. it's the same way that chipmunk vocals are totally fine in hardcore, but not so great in say......baroque music. actually....

I thought at first that everything from "I'm an MC" to "changed for me" was part of the verse, and was quite impressed...

I dont have a problem with qouting rappers like that( although i would never do it on any of my own material!!). I dont steal verses just the odd line and incorparate it into the show. I consider it a tribute to my roots!Usually those that reconise it seem kinda impressed that ive referenced somthing they allready know and love.
@Macc - Your right i could just as easily have come up with my own lyrics ( i do !! ) but i enjoy referencing what i love too (not just Hip-Hop but Jazz and Reggae) !!
No one has ever said that im a biter !!! Just thought id throw this on table as im always interested in these topics . To be honest this convo kind of ammuses me because surely if all you lot are making D&B you are allready copying an existing format i.e breakbeats chopped up at 170bpm ??? HUH !!??

yes, but they're not chipmunks
countertenors can actually sing

it just seems totally lame
sure it's fine though, if i don't recognize the quotes

You would say that you only ever use samples...
And no-one responded to my comment that "Roots" are live hip-hop and sound heavy!!

Macc Wrote:You've kind of missed the point. Of course sampling - by definition - is using someone else's music/sound in your own, but at what point does something really become yours, and not just a rip off? That's what I am interested in...
May be it's when it means something more or different or feels different to the original sample source.
E.G the track amen brother is kinda funky party churchy vibe, but amen has been used in dark, uplifting, and other different emotional vibes/feelings. I.E it means something and gives a different emotional feel to the original source...
If it gives out the same emotions as the original then maybe it is a rmx...
I dont know????
