Cabling issues

Fuck me, what an interesting topic...

Right, I have a Mac with an Firewire audio interface, a DJ mixer, couple of decks and powered monitors.

At the mo, the powered monitors are connected to the master out on the DJ mixer and I route the audio out from the Mac to the audio interface and then through one of the DJ mixer's line-in channels to the monitors.

I also run the audio from the decks through the mixer and into the line-in audio on the interface for purposing of recording vinyl on the Mac.

I was just thinking, would it be better to wire the powered monitors directly into the audio interface and then run the master out from the DJ mixer into the audio interface's line in?

Hope that makes sense.
Yes imo

even better would be to have the option of monitoring though the mixer so you can check your tunes through the mixer for a/bing purposes against vinyl or whatever Smile

but i'd definitely say it's best to run straight out and in, for a number of reasons. Smile

Ta.

Yeah, this would be v useful.

So, I would have my system set up like this:

Vinyl ------ mixer ----- interface ---- monitors
Tune on Mac ----- interface ------ monitors

Would be able to play both through the monitors at the same time, but the mixer would have no control over the tune on the Mac, obviously.

but need a way to do:

Vinyl ------ mixer ----- interface ---- monitors
Tune on Mac ----- interface ---- mixer ----- monitors

which can't be done, as I would have to run the tune on Mac signal back through the interface, giving me lots of feedback right?

So, I could do:

Vinyl ----- mixer ----- monitors
Tune on Mac ----- interface ----- mixer ----- monitors

as well as a separate connection:
Vinyl ---- mixer ---- interface--- Mac

to record mixes/samples, etc

but that doesn't seem particularly efficient.

Me head hurts.
What is the interface in question? Smile

It is the same as if you were to route a signal out to an outboard unit and then back into your mac but the mixer is the outboard . Just think of it like that

M-Audio FW Solo - nothing flash but does the job for now
It's got two line ins and two line outs, so feedback won't be an issue.

Just route one output directly to the speakers, the other to the mixer.

One input comes from the decks, the other is free.

The only thing you'd need to buy would be a decent 2 or 3 way switcher, run the monitor cables from that and Bob's yer auntie's live-in lover.

The thing is, those line ins and line outs aren't really two separate channels, they're split left-right channels.

What I've done is just stick the right channel monitor into the right channel output on the interface and the left monitor into the left channel output, then the line output from the DJ mixer into the two line-ins.

I can still pass a signal from both the decks and a tune on the Mac through the monitors at the same time, it's just that I won't be able to use the mixer to control the tune from the Mac. which isn't too much of a big deal.
Just do that in the software innit Smile

Seems alright, let us know how you get on. bit fucking gay they say it is 2-ins and outs when they mean 1 stereo. Bunch of cunts.

Blunt, what's the drivers like on your soundcard? Does the volume jump around when you change it? Like stuttering the audio, which my M Audio Firewire Audiophile does - big pile of shite.
Nah mate, the volume levels seem pretty stable to be honest.
Is the Audiophile different from the FW Solo then?

But yeah, I feel a bit mislead on the whole 2 input/output thing as I did indeed think it was two 'stereo' line in/outs. Basts.
