I think a scene having got very good at doing one or two things can make it harder for people to try other stuff - you'd have to take a couple of steps backward to go forward which discourages people from trying anything particularly groundbreaking.

"Chopped up drums with a heavy bassline"

Am I refering to DnB or Dubstep?

dubstep has almost no chopped up drums :P

Lol
thing is, there's a big difference between what Skream and Shackleton do, just as there's a big difference between what Polska and Pendulum do, so bit tricky to make generalisations.

I kinda thought some dubstep producers were taking a few more risks musically than dnb producers (going really minimal (Hamas Rule, Sine of the Dub), overlapping with techno (Anti-war Dub, 2562's stuff, Martyn's stuff), but then there's a hell of a lot of formulaic stuff floating around.
Saying that, there's been a fuck of a lot of decent, original dnb lately
These threads are always really interesting but also really fucking futile.

Absolutely spot on Bluntos.
they haven't started pigeonholing different strains of dubstep yet
needs more clowndub, liquidub, and neurodub

I hadn't noticed..

Blunt - the comparison between skream/shackleton and pendulum/polska doesn't hold up really.. Skream and most other big dubstep producers make bangers but still make some deep stuff... sine us by skream, or emotions by benga for example... deep, aquatic technoid squelchers. and they still very much operate within the same scene framework as people like pinch and 2562 or whoever. not shackleton maybe, but then if you asked him he'd say he's never made a dubstep tune in his life. but when was the last time you heard something deep and experimental by pendulum or twisted individual?

seperate elements of the scene are still co-operating. you find people like pinch and cyrus on a bill with people like hatcha and cluekid as standard.. they'll even happily play b2b sets. when was the last time you saw hazard b2b equinox?

I would've said more housey than techno. Certainly in terms of the beats anyway, but I know you've heard a fair bit of techno. Care to enlighten me on why you think this is techno-sounding/influenced?
mala is definitely more of a house head..
What's good, is its still very mixed. I can go to fwd and see a deep techno-ish set by appleblim, a minmal set by youngsta and then a banging set by skream.

Kinda like old jungle. D+B these days is kinda one style all night.
Clearly some dubstep has taken some influences from dnb. :P

However, how they could be described as 'the same' is beyond me.

Anytone who hasn't, read this Burial interview:

http://blackdownsoundboy.blogspot.com/20...chive.html

Sums up the both the influences and the differences between dubstep and dnb pretty well IMO.

good interview Xyxthumbs

i like the way he talks about music Falcon
Yes he's so spot-on and articulate, a real rarity in a talented music-maker... everything he says about jungle hit home for me especially Yes

lol at the tea reference.

That's just how I imagine the Burial LP actually, and that's before I ever saw the front cover.
I have still never listened to the Burial LP in order, all at once in its entirety. Tonight, or in the next few nights when I have time, I think I shall do that, and make a mental note of all the interesting little tidbits that he said about certain tunes on there.
i dont like the burial lp really Baffled

n-type was getting bare philosophical on his show last week - talking about what would happen if you had a motor that could drive around in space and drove to the edge of the universe and stuff, like is there a big stop sign or something. man is deep, burial can stick his tea
Best thing i heard all year. or for ages or whatever
What, the burial LP? Still not bought or heard that properly Oops
