Herbie Hancock - Future 2 Future

true true. i was just busting your ass over the "jazz pioneer"/sampler comment... but i suppose if i listened to any other contemporary non-acoustic stuff by Herbie i would've understood the implications of yer comment as the stuff i own by him stops in the 70s (VSOP, Headhunters etc.) and i haven't really paid too much attention to what comes after besides listening to certain live performances recorded from NPR or college radio over here. personally, i have a hard time deciding what's genuine with this type of stuff because jazz guys have jumped on all sorts of trends since amplification was the status quo for pop music (and before that, even, to a lesser degree if i recall correctly), so there's always the one chance that they really don't give a fuck and are trying anything to see what happens and i usually default to giving the benefit of the doubt towards that, being positive about it first unless it's just really awful or totally apparent cash-making business. i didn't know his releases followed the pop path so accurately though, so that provides better context. cool!
The VSOP and Headhunters stuff is world class!

mine too
Well... I like the idea of combing electronic and acoustic instruments both live and in the studio. Cool
very few older musicians manage to shine in a form of music which was born so long after they were growing up.. i guess that will happen to us eventually, too

70s headhunters is still king, followed by his late 60s albums but i really want to check that massey hall live now

theres a headhunters album without herbie too, "survival of the fittest". it is an amazing album and served as my bible of funk for many years

i like the idea too ;]

still thought "future 2 future" was, well, basically... a bit rubbish
In a forging new ground sense, its better (in my opinion) than a lot of straight forward jazz these days. I am thinking about that track Tony Williams when writing this. It seems as though is trying to get in to it. Whether that happens or not I cannot comment on. Grin

Tony Williams for the win!

PS acoustic Herbie rocks.
havent listened to this album for a while, but I do like this album, and where it mixes new technology with the more traditional elements....

Shiva, I know u like this album, u r the only dj I heard play one of these tunes in a set..... (not sure exactly what tune it was)

wonder what reception this would get at technicality??

I forget which one I played now!!

I agree with you that "it mixes new technology with the more traditional elements...." which I like!!

If I ever get a set @ tech I will drag it out!! Cool
Everything I've said earlier in this thread sort of came down on my frustations as a 'musician'; one who's struggling with his conception of what music (in general) should sound like and maybe more importantly the way the music is created.

I've sort of let these kind of thoughts go quite a while ago as they spoiled the fun of listening to and appreciating the music.

Sort of on topic: "Rockit" is a track and a half!

I was so full of shit back then.

Even though Herbs did better albums, this one has its moments. Still don't like some of the drum programming on some of the D&B tunes, but the atmospheres are pure bliss. Kind of reminds me of the stuff 4Hero is doing at the moment, which I absolutely love to death.
